Thread: I got in!!!

I'm not really warping the statistics, those were the exact statistics, and even if people living outside waterloo want to go there, it has to be at least EQUAL to the amount of people who apply from other provinces. If only OUAC would release statistics of ontario vs nationwide. Really, 5 times as many acceptances to Ontario seems a little extreme..

not at all, public universities are usually supposed to give a general preference to citizens of the area(atleast it is like this in the US). For example out of state transfer students represent < 2-3% of UT Austins new student roster each year, with out of state students in general representing ~10% of the new student body each year. UC Berkeley on the other hand, goes even more extreme, as only ~4-5% of their students are not residents.

In the end, it kind of goes like this:

1) if you recieve funding from mostly the state, your state government expects most of your students to be from your state, so that way their constituents will be happy that their tax dollars are being spent on fellow residents of the state.

2) if you recieve regional/local funding, your local city/region government expects you to lay aside a few slots for local/regional students from your area.

Most of this I have gathered from talking to the admissions departments of the UT system and the UC system.

Cool. I live in Tennessee, so that college may be one I'll be consider in a couple years (I'm a sophomore now. Man, I've been posting on this board since I was like in 7th grade). PM me or IM me some info about the school when you start. Right now I've been looking into Rhodes over in Memphis, but I still have lots of time to change.

well in all honesty, I was surprised I got in, being only 16 and all(maybe doing a couple of semesters at a local college with a ~4.0 GPA average over 33 credit units helped?). I recommend seriously that you get in contact with schools early, and ask alot of questions. This helps you pretty much in two ways:

1) it shows that you are actually interested in their college, not just a casual browser like so many people(the people that flunk/drop out in general). I also have tended to notice you can people to put good word in for you(or so I hear), because if you maintain friendly communications with admissions and other departments, it might help when it comes time for the admissions commitee to choose who is accepted.

2) You can get so much info from them about the institution, so that it will be a lot less of a "shift" in life than if you just applied to a college and walked in a week before classes to register(due to lack of transportation, I am going to be one of the people that gets advising/registration the week before classes ).

It's quite different in canada, however. Universities aren't nearly as plentiful, and we have such a small population in comparison to the US, that 75% (ontario students / total) is a huge sum. In most states there are enough quality universities to satisfy most students, and their studies. It's not so in canada, for a quality school, there is usually just one or two in the country. Lets look at it this way: This year the average entering grade for CS students to waterloo was high 70's, low 80's.. In order for me to get in, Waterloo told me that I needed at least a 90 in Calculus and Advanced Math (got a 90 in one, 95 in the other). I'm not talking the average was 90.. the cutoff for me was 90.

That's a pretty freaking big leap.


edit: as for funding. Waterloo as a city is VERY small, and the university will get likely no funding.

now that you mention that, that is plain old garbage they are giving you, I would check to see if what they are doing is legal.
