it's not a new enigma though... IMO, this doesn't really seem all that important to me... for all anybody knows, it could just be some random letters somebody put there, or an inside joke, or the initials of some people...

Well, the code breakers are going to have a much more difficult time, since the ciphertext is so limited, and they dont have events happening in real time with which to compare their results.

"Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

**** THE PROOF THAT Lurker IS EVIL ****

    L U R K E R
    76 85 82 75 69 82 - as ASCII values
    4 4 1 3 6 1 - digits added
    \_/ \_/ \_/ \_/ \_____/
    4 4 1 3 7 - digits added

    Thus, "Lurker" is 44137.
Add 5491 to it - this is the year Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuked to make the world a better place, written backwards - you will get 49628.

Subtract 2191 from the number - this is the year Titanic went for its first and last voyage, written backwards. It gives 47437.

Turn the number backwards, subtract 1531 - the year Richard Roose was conveniently boiled to death for trying to poison an archbishop. The number is now 71943.

Subtract 1, the number of unity . The result will be 71942.

Turn the number backwards, subtract 1686 - the year Newton published wildly misunderstood "Principia". The number is now 23231.

Write 1889 backwards. Translate it to octal - this will give you 23231. Thus, 23231 stands for 1889, the year Adolf Hitler was born.
Do not make direct eye contact with me.

Read the link that major_small posted and you'll understand.
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

    Code:
**** THE PROOF THAT XSquared IS EVIL ****

       X S Q U A R E D
      24 19 17 21 1 18 5 4 - as numbers
       6 1 8 3 1 9 5 4 - digits added
      \_____/ \_____/ \_____/ \_____/
       7 2 1 9 - digits added

    Thus, "XSquared" is 7219.

Multiply it by 3, the symbol of fulfillment - the number is now 21657.

Add 7791 to it - this is the year Elvis left the planet, written backwards - you will get 29448.

Turn the number backwards, and add 1778 - the year Oliver Pollock invented '$', the symbol of exploitation, suffering and injustice. The number is now 86270.

Subtract 1912, the year Titanic went for its first and last voyage. The result will be 84358.

Turn the number backwards, subtract 1948 - the year World Health Organization was formed to defend the world from democracy. The number is now 83400.

This number, when read backwards, gives 00438. This, written in octal, gives 666 - the number of the Beast.

    Enough said - QED.
