Ok, I have to comment on this. I just came home to the US from a week in France. I have to say that without a doubt, there are, on average, more people overweight here.
One thing you have to keep in mind tho.... we are a lot bigger than a lot of the countries that we are being compared to and I'm not sure that's being taken into effect. I still think we, as a country, are unhealthy eaters... but European countries have fat people too.
And besides... it's like a french man told me... their women might be skinnier... but that also means they've got no boobs for the most part. Take your pick. I'd take a girl with 5-10 extra pounds over a stick anyday.
