    Several privacy advocacy groups are making a stink about this because a computer program will scan e-mails for the purpose of targeted text ads. I don't see how that's a concern, but some think otherwise.

    Do you think that GMail will be an invasion of your privacy? If so, will it be enough to discourage you from using it?
    FAQ

    "The computer programmer is a creator of universes for which he alone is responsible. Universes of virtually unlimited complexity can be created in the form of computer programs." -- Joseph Weizenbaum.

    "If you cannot grok the overall structure of a program while taking a shower, you are not ready to code it." -- Richard Pattis.

    Invasion maybe if it stores the information, but at the same time I have one thing to say to those who use it and complain of invasion:

    BOO I am sillyI am sillyI am sillyI am sillyING HOO!

    If you don't like what they do just use their service.

    Oh I'm surprised no one has pointed this out:

    1000megs != 1 gig

    1024 megs == 1 gig

    Actually, you're thinking of a gibibyte. The SI unit of a gigabyte is 10^9 bytes.

    Google's Gmail sparks privacy row
    However, its terms of use acknowledge that "residual copies of email may remain on our systems, even after you have deleted them from your mailbox or after the termination of your account".

    Um your point is?
    1 073 741 824 bytes - 1024 times 1024 times 1024, or 230. This is the definition used in computer science, computer programming and almost all computer operating systems. This is measure can be abbreviated as GiB to avoid ambiguity
    In speech, gigabyte is often abbreviated to gig,
    Last time I check this was community of programmers and not telecomm peeps

    This is General Discussions, points are few and far between! :-)

    In reference to storage, a gigabyte is usually 1000 megabytes. Try buying a harddisk where a gigabyte == 1024MB.

    Yeah, it can be a little annoying when your new harddisk shrinks by a few gigabytes as soon as you put it in the computer!

    I have unlimited space on my free email at speedy at pagemac.com. However, its because I'm an admin and we run the email service.

    Btw, pagemac.com is linked to two dedicated T1 lines for frikkin free. We know the company's head personally and we use his backup lines for free haha.

    Google's Gmail could be blocked

    Gmail, the planned free e-mail service from Google, could be facing strong legal opposition in California. A draft law is being drawn up by local Democratic Senator Liz Figueroa, who calls Gmail "an invasion of privacy".

    Bleh I'm sure the privacy issues really aren't issues at all. I hope this comes out soon (I'm at like 80+% of my email storage limit currently)
