Thread: need clarification on something...

What exactly is "computational mathematics"? I have been talking to some people I know who are at UC Irvine and UC Berkeley and they suggest that if you are into the mathematics/programming/applicational side of Computer Science and you want to do work in a different field that heavily uses programming/math, that one get a degree in Computational mathematics along with whatever you are interested in(prime example, one of the people I know is getting his PhD in computational mathematics and biochemistry and is working to mathematically represent tumor growth accurately as his PhD thesis[actually, more complex than that, but he started getting into some wierd stuff that I have not heard of]).

It's basically mathematics from a standpoint of algorithm-centered and heavy computational (hence the name) methods for solving problems. You would do a lot of programming in it (compared to other math courses).

I might be interested in it then, as I am mainly into the programming side of CS anyway, and I also if I wanted to get a second degree, could apply alot more stuff from mathematics than CS(for example, if I got a CPA, I could design my own accounting software for specific purposes etc.)
