Thread: .ogg vs. mp3

if you have WinAmp and SoundForge on the same computer, you know what im talking about.

OggVorbis, compresses with 100% accuracy, almost no chance of it getting screwed up, its careful in the compression process, and maintains near perfect quality, at a smaller file size. (1/3 of the file size, uses Lossy compression). At the cost of compression going slower and is less supported (WinAmp5 doesn't even support it anymore, i love WinAmp2.91) OGG is also open sourced and free! As in you dont need a license to use it in your production (good for game devs!)

MPEG Layer-3, (mp3), compresses faster, at the exception of sometimes (not often) the wave being a little messed up, quality of music goes down, with the addition of being supported by a good majority of music players (winamp, realone, quicktime, etc). (MP3 is copyrighted and you need a license to use it.)

if MP3 and OGG had the same popularity rate, which would you personally be going for, knowing these basic facts.

Unlike BMJ I have resons for mp3. First of, mp3s can be converted perfectly if you know what your doing. Mp3s can be worse if you don't know how to rip and encode from a cd the corect way. Don't use music match, or any other software that came with your mp3 player because it sucks!

Install EAC then download the LAME executable and place it in the directory you installed it. (Usually C:\Program Files\Exact Audio Copy\) These are the best programs for making mp3s, EAC is the best cd ripper and LAME is the best mp3 encoder. If you have WindowsXP and Win2000: Install the ASPI drivers. Download a .cfg. Then start up Exact Audio Copy. From the pulldown menu, select which drive you would like to use. Download the EAC configuration profile for your drive. Save this .cfg file usually C:\Program Files\Exact Audio Copy\Profiles\. Restart EAC. The .CFG profile you downloaded should now be available in the profile menu at the bottom right of your EAC screen. Make sure you are showing EAC the LAME executable. If you saved lame.exe in C:\Program Files\Exact Audio Copy\ you won't have to change anything. Otherwise, from the EAC Menu select compression options : external compresion and show EAC to lame.exe

Do this and you will have perfect mp3 encoding. If you don't, don't put your rips over any p2p network!

Exactly - both are lossy. Your "fact" about ogg being 100% accurate is bull. They're just lossy in different ways.

I'll go with mp3, because, like ober, I'm not converting all my mp3s to another format where they'll just lose more.

Doesn't support what? ogg? I play them on mine all the time.

WinAmp5 is the newest version and also owned by AOL, OGG support has been permanently cancelled (unless a plugin is downloaded)

I didn't ACTUALLY mean 100% accuracy, but damn near close.

And every audio i rip from my CDs, i convert to OGG, its a smaller file size for my system, and plays on my version of WinAmp.

To each his own, ya know?

yall are all crazy! we big balla's use WAV's, yo! big file sizes, off the heezy! mang yall messed up, all wantin yo small file sizes, who wants that, yo?

I have a fast enough conection to download the vergine cda files. If an mp3 player would play the cdas though. I like mp3 players because there small!

That's neat, because I haven't downloaded any plugins, and I play oggs with Winamp 5.
