My wife has worked in the education sector, and most recently has trained as an adult educator. I asked her this myself. She is not an expert in that field but told me that there is a "touch" alphabet which can be extended to cover quite a large amount of general day to day language, however, it has a lot of problems with totally abstract concepts.
She said she would ask about it for me - I too was somewhat curious.
