many of the things in the movies, for example the deep romanctic story between Aragorn and Eowyn is also not in the original books....Jackson took many things from Tolkiens letters and essays about the book itself.

I think we can conlude this.

Yes, there small changes, and some stuff was cut out from the theater version of the movies, but you have to admit they did an incredibly good job.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy follows the books better than any movie I have ever seen that is based off of a book.

Some sacrifices do have to be made, because movies are different than books.

In the movies, they attempted to include the scenes that were most important to the plot and flow of the story, and for all the scenes they did not include, most of those are included in the extended edition.

Therefore, they did an excellent job.

If you want to see a movie that did not follow the book whatsoever, watch Battlefield Earth.

It only covered 1/3 of the book, and it changed around most of what it did cover, so it covers more like 1/6 of the book.

I to am looking forward to ROTK! Guys get the extended DVD versions, you will like!

I must've read a different version or watched a different movie ...

Here's a link to an article that deals with the computer generated battle sequences in the movie. Apparently the AI's first response to being plopped into a such a big and terrifying battle was to run away!!

Basically, all the necessary information for decision-making was fed into this network of computers without determining for them whether they would win or lose.

But this attempt to ensure that they acted spontaneously almost sabotaged the battleground sequences.

For the first two years, the biggest problem we had was soldiers fleeing the field of battle.

This sums it up nicely. Movies and books have to be told differently. While the basic story can stay the same, film is a much different experience than print.
