just wanted to know which versions of linux most people are running
i want to start using linux some( mostly to make programing easier for my schoolwork) and just to start getting used to it
want to know which one people would suggest installing and that i can download for free
also which ones are easy installs
i will be duel boot with windows xp pro using 2 hard drives

thnaks yea i have looked at bot mandrake and redhat which were in those posts but it seems that you must pay for alot of there software suits and stuff
Mandrake have a free d/l edition. It's not as complete as the paid-for version, but it's nice, specially if you're moving from a windows enviroment. I'm using Mdk 9.2 'till I get the LFS version working.
go to http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29 and download the i586 version. You usually don't need the third CD, it's just if you need a language with special characters and that stuff. Completely uncessary for English and others with the latin alphabet I would think.

Debian http://www.debian.org/. Once you've got everything up and working correctly, you'll probably have had to do so much configuration and troubleshooting, you'll already be halfway towards being a formidable Linux hacker.

I think most of use here use the term hacker in the late 70s early 80s verison, when being a hacker was a good thing and the term hadn't be warped by the media (and some bad movies [wargames excluded])
I used Mandrake 8.0 for a good few months, but lost interest in it.
