Mandrake have a free d/l edition. It's not as complete as the paid-for version, but it's nice, specially if you're moving from a windows enviroment. I'm using Mdk 9.2 'till I get the LFS version working.
go to http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29 and download the i586 version. You usually don't need the third CD, it's just if you need a language with special characters and that stuff. Completely uncessary for English and others with the latin alphabet I would think.

Debian http://www.debian.org/. Once you've got everything up and working correctly, you'll probably have had to do so much configuration and troubleshooting, you'll already be halfway towards being a formidable Linux hacker.

    gentoo: http://www.gentoo.org

You use their portage tree (emerge is the greatest command ever) to download and compile ebuilds so that everything is tailor-fit to your system - even the kernel.

Why does everyone that uses Linux seem to get a wrap for being a hacker? The more I get into computers the more I notice there are steriotypes in the computer world.

If you had a single braincell in your head you would know what he said. Instead, you just keep thinking that meant that in a 1337 h4xx0r way. ^themax

Well It isn't really his comment that I based it off of. I saw the comment and just sorta thought about it. So if you had a single brain cell in your head you would know what the hell I'm talking about. Arrest yourself.

A Linux hacker isn't a "hacker" in the same sort of sense as a 1337 hax0r or anything.

I think most of use here use the term hacker in the late 70s early 80s verison, when being a hacker was a good thing and the term hadn't be warped by the media (and some bad movies [wargames excluded])

I used Mandrake 8.0 for a good few months, but lost interest in it.
