    Unix Linux?

Ok I know they are OS's (I think)... Thats about it, OH and yeah my proffesor takes off tons of less points if you right your programs in this OS's...

So whats the diffrence between Unix and Linux?

I did a ton of searching, yet I never came accross a diffrence question or if they ARE diffrent.

Also I seen TONS of free Linux and Unix OS's, what is a good one? Im a C/C++ programmer...

Back in the day an OS came up called Unix. It was an awesome OS. It kept growing, many codeforks came out of it, and clones. Linux is one of those clones. Linux is simply a clone of Unix. So, yes, they are diff OS's.

    I would recommend trying FreeBSD.

If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Since you are new to *nix (also know as Linux or UNIX), you should not try FreeBSD. That is a distro for more advanced users. Give Mandrake or Fedora (the "new" RedHat) a try if you want to get into Linux. Good luck!

Since we are doing this. I have a laptop. I'm looking to put a 'nix distro on it. This may be stupid but....Does FreeBSD have a Gnome or KDE interface sort of like Mandrake and the sort, and is it harder/more complicated to use and install on a laptop than other major linux distros. I'm thinking either FreeBSD, Debian, or Mandrake.

Get a really long sheet of paper for your printer
Who would put that on their wall? Crazy programmers

Even though I'm new to Linux I am enjoying Debian. Of course I like just jumping into the ocean and fighting to keep my head above water.

Strange, I'm using that kernel and the nVidia drivers have no problems.

Your teacher takes point off if you write apps for *nix!? Are you in a Windows development course of does he just hate them?

I thiink he means that he teach doesn't take off as many points if you use linux.

Well, that's all right then. The posting is a bit cryptic though.
