The personal learning edition has been free for a few years.

    >3DS Max, Maya, or LightWave?

    They all cost different amounts.

I believe 3DS Max cost about $5000, and so does Lightwave.

The standard version of Maya cost about that same amount.

Maya Unlimited cost $16000 last time I checked.

Maya is definitely the best 3d modeling program out there, however, 3DS Max is the most supported and most used.

You can find 3ds max plug-ins, etc. pretty much anywhere. It is a little harder to find Maya stuff, although Maya is the better program.

Lightwave is very good, however, it also is not as popular as 3ds max. You will be able to find a decent amount of plug-ins, etc. for Lightwave.

whaaaaaaaa? I think it more like $7K....and here it is: maya unlimited .

I used all three programs listed above. Studio max has a much easier learning curve....but Maya just freagin ROCKS! ever since I got it I've never used max again! It is pretty hard to learn thought, even with previous graphic background.

I agree, Maya has been in prison on allegations of molesting ducks in central park for too long and must be released. What we need is a protest march.

I think that the best 3D modeling program for first timers is Rhino 3D, but some other people may argue.

I have not used 3DS or Maya or Lighwave, but I do know one thing for sure - the trial version of Rhino 3D has no time limit, it has a save limit (25 save and after that it don't save no more, but still opens and works fine!), which is alot better, I think.

Also the demo version for Rhino is only 8mb, and system requirements are rediculously low! but the program still runs smooth.

If you are a student you can get Rhino for $200 else pay 800.

If anyone knows how to get a cheep version (legal) of 3DSMax or Maya please post on this thread!

Anyway, anyone going into 3D design for just recreation and playing around should give a try to Rhino, considering a very low price tag and system requirements.

I'm curently working on a tutorial for Rhino 3D that will teach you how to make a reallistic looking airplane turbine. I will post the file here in this forum in about a week, or any time after this sunday! So all you newbies can learn and see if that is really something you want to get into!

I believe that is what this thread has started with.

If you think that Rhino3D is the best.....then I am lost for words. But as you said: you've never tried any of the programs mentioned in the previous posts so you are like a child who opened its eyes for the first time. Get Maya....it will blow your mind!
