Do you think getting stoned adversly affects your programming ability?
Yes - It impairs your ability to think logically, and evaluate a series of solutions based upon their merits (assuming you find them, which goes back to the first problem). Additionally, its hard to focus on such tasks when your health is deteriorating.
The word rap as it applies to music is the result of a peculiar phonological rule which has stripped the word of its initial voiceless velar stop.
What, like programming while stoned? Of course - are you retarded?

Actually I wanted to know whether it has long term affects and how it affects you during. Really wouldn't mind seeing some supporting evidence for your argument too. Is that to much to expect from a group of educated people. I am not advocating smoking and the common sense attitude is that of course it doesn't help.
Still I have heard people say it helps there creative abilities and in my opinion programming is a creative endeavour.
I smoke cigarrets and let me tell you it may not help but if I stand up once an hour for a cigarret break. It gives me time to think and come back for another hour.
thats total bull shiz brother; I used to smoke also, and when studying/programming I also took a break every hour or so to light one up, and I also used the same excuse to smoke: "it'll clear my mind". After I stopped smoking and drinking coffee my school productivity went up by about 50%!!! You should do the same....just STOP it!Originally posted by curlious

I stopped smoking after I was out of breath after 15 minutes of full court basketball.
But to your original question: I've tried weed in the past maybe a handfull of time...but I never attempted anythin creative while doing it. I was never actually "high" so I can't really say anything definitive from first person account. With that said, you always hear of musicians and artists now and in the past using different sorts of drugs to help them in their endevours. $$$$ even poets like Byron liked their Opium; Froid (sp?), the psychologist couldn't live without crack so who knows? All I know is that you can induce anycreative ability naturally if you could induce it under the effect of a drug.

*cough*cigarettes*cough*cigarrets
Also it is my belief that people who use the argument "it makes me more creative" to justify using drugs are just grasping at any possible reason.

http://www.abc.net.au/science/correx/archives/dopey.htmEffects on the Brain: THC suppresses the neurons in the information-processing system of the hippocampus, the part of the brain that is crucial for learning, memory, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivation.
And there is much more to find. This is what I found quickly and without doing too much background checking.Paul Willis: What about the benefits of marijuana smoking? Let's start with the brain: does it make you more creative? Nadia Sowolij: No, there's no evidence that they are better. They think that they are. I mean it's true that marijuana can make you think more tangentially, but they only feel like they're being more creative, in reality they're not. There's evidence to suggest that they're perhaps not being as productive as they would have if they weren't smoking marijuana
No firsthand experience here, but while highs may have produced lyrics like "yellow submarine," do you think that you could write the music to go with the lyrics at the same time?
Personally, I would rather listen to lyrics that make some sense
(sorry I'm making some assumptions here, but I've never seen any value in substance abuse)
"Think not but that I know these things; or think
I know them not: not therefore am I short
Of knowing what I ought."

the only substance that I still abuse way too much is good ol' alcohol. I'll take a 1.75L of Finlandia over dope anyday!Originally posted by JaWiB

this is the kind of stuff a stoned persion makes:
That seems rather creative Davidp
Such is life.
I agree I need to stop smoking cigaretts! As to smoking weed I also agree, but admit I have tried programming while smoking. I found I tend to look at everything in more detail and it slows me down. I think I am a better debugger while stoned. As to the creative aspect thinking tangentially may help in some cases, but often the simplest solution is the best and who knows what you will come up with stoned. Code complete states that tricky solutions are not the best solutions. Unfortunately it is fun if you have the desciplen(sp?) to do it while stoned and this is a drawback if you know you should quit. I am not going to try and find evidence to support any possible positive aspects because ultimately it is not good and I don't want to try to encourage the behaivoir. Next time I get stoned though I will attempt to write some code and see how it goes posting here about my observations.
What a coincidence - I drive better drunk!

Well if you want to endanger other peoples life it's your twist but I don't think I am endangering anyone elses life. The word smart*#! comes to mind.
No, seriously, I always get where I'm going way faster. Sometimes the police even escort me!

I think you are more interested in getting someones goat than expressing your opinion on the subject. First you belittle me by implying I am retarded. I expect your young but I could be wrong. You probably have little experience and because of your statements I tend to think you are bigoted. Not open to input.
To further the discussion. I do not drink but once did. Comparing alcohol to pot is a bit of a stretch. The point is though if you drink and think anyone that smokes is a looser than you are a hypocrit.
Ultimately anything that is inflicting harm upon oneself is a bit irrational and makes me question my own motives. Emotional actions aren't always rational and the "fun" aspects of substance abuse are no excuse. It gives me insight into my own personality. In favor of a little endulgent fun, I am ultimately the cause of my own demise
The reason I posted is because I do question my own actions and with thoughtful input it may help me change my own habits, but I don't know if I can give up playing Wolfenstein ET while stoned
