Just turned down a computer operator job to stay at a factory.

Must be nuts eh?

Right now...money if of the utmost importance especially in this economy. Was a possibility of becoming a programmer later...if one of their programming positions was vacated.

Oh well....perhaps another opportunity will arise.

Not sure if I would like a programming job or not. I absolutely love to program my computer.....but then again I'm working on what I want to and coding how I want to. I bet it's a lot different when you have to code something a certain way for 8 long hours with no say as to what goes into the program.

Maybe staying a hobbyist coder is the best idea.

Any comments? I'm quite disturbed about my decision but I've only been at the factory for like 3 months, have put in for a supervisor position, ...just couldn't leave at this time guys.

So Bubba is still a hobbyist coder....sorry.

I'm in pretty much the same situation, but I've decided a career in coding is not going to happen...I would have to start at the bottom as my degree isnt IT related. That would mean a big paycut and to be realistic, an uncertain future.

I've recently gone back to University part time to finish my professional qualifications for my career...I'm already holding down a job at a level which it would take me years to get to if I now went into IT. I'll hopefully be done in 2 years...so it means me spending less time coding etc...

Still...has to be done.

How refreshing it is to see an amateur actual realise that fact. Most bedroom coders tend to assume that a career as a professional is just the same as their hobby but paid!

Yeah, all of the professional coders seem to basically hate their job...unless you go and start your own software company (which successfully happens like never).

there have been quite a few on this site that just hate their programming jobs...

EDIT: and I also doubt there are many people that actually put all *that* much honest effort into their own projects...what I mean is few people actually know what it is to spend 8 hours a day many days a week on a coding project...my personal projects are getting so freaking complicated that I cannot spend more than 3 honest hours of thinking, then I have to go play a computer game or eat or beat up my sister.

Well I'm out of the house now and my sister is all grown up...but I remember them days and they were fun.

But I'm like you my projects are so large right now that I can't spend too much time on em...headache city. Classes and structures and hierarchical diagrams and.....you get the idea.

Same here. I like to code as a hobbyist, but I'm probably not going to become a professional coder.

I'm going off and getting a degree in business administration/marketing, and I've opted to not to get my computer science degree.

I may switch to Unix to keep Win32 API as my hobby. A job I am looking into currently is Unix and that would allow me the freedom of enjoying a certain platform separate from work. That could make a big difference.

I think I would enjoy a job as a programmer, but I currently work as a cook at Taco Treat. There is absolutly no mental satisfaction to making a Taco.

At the same time I know I am not ready my knowledge is lacking my experience limited, but I am struggling to become better and that is important.

Working on a project for eight hours a day everyday of the week wouldn't be fun, but if there is interaction between programmers, discussion, new challenges and learning involved the benifits would be great even if I was only making $7.00 an hour like at Taco Treat
