Can I use Microsoft Front Page extensions?
What about "wysiwyg" style web page publishing products?


Virgin.net does not support Frontpage Extensions. There are some issues concerning site security, and a decision was taken that presently, the problems caused both for Users and Virgin.net technical people would far outweight any gains.

As to the second question, there are now many "What You See Is What You Get" Web design products available - many even come inside your normal everyday browsers. You are more than welcome to build your sites using these products, however, Virgin.net does not support them, and so you must make sure that you know where the Help Files for each product are. We may not be able to help if you get in to trouble with your design, or uploading, for example.

At Virgin.net we believe that is it important for Users to understand what a basic web page actually is, so that you will feel confident about changing and updating, and not get stuck when things go wrong. Actually, it's rather easy to make a web page, and we have produced a range of Tutorials that will help show you how. If you know what sort of page you would like, then design it on paper, or in a word processing document first, then work through the easy to follow Tutorials, and build it as you go.

So, I thought I would use my freespace. I DO own Frontpage, but what exactly can I not use? Extensions etc? I have in the past used frontpage and viewed the code and copied/pasted it-never published before though.

Any other programs I could use? Free would be nice-or downloadable heh.

I could use HTML but I cant be bothered right now. Or is it ok to use Frontpage if I dont use extensions-seeing as I dont know what it means

It's all the same until you get to CGI. Mozilla also comes with a WYSIWIG editor.

I got taught notepad makes HTML at Uni, quite well.

I am a 'bit' lazy now.

So as second poster says, if I just use basic functions on Frontpage, I should be ok?

Notepad certainly does make HTML nicely. However, making tables can get a bit tedious :-/

Mozilla's Composer isn't bad, but it can produce some messy messy code at times. I was editing a page using it and looked at the source.

Not kidding. It's also lacking some functionality (there are a lot of things you can't do with it). It's still pretty good for a free basic editor though.

Frontpage Extensions are files on the web server which allow you to publish directly from FrontPage to the server.

You're right. What Frontpage spits out doesn't even qualify as HTML.

I didn't mean it like that. I personally despise almost all WYSIWIG editors (except MS Visual Interdev, which has ASP highlighting). The main reason is that most of the time when I'm working on someone's website, they want it to be compliant with the W3C standards, and I find that most WYSIWIG editors aren't good with standard-compliance.
