" the amendment made provision for the imposition of a levy on blank audio recording media"

As a canadian musician I get some of the cash made from this levy

    hah :P
    good luck
Anyway to sum up i can say this
basicly 5 years ago, Canada, under presure from the entertainment industry placed a levy(tax) on blank recordable medias, Audio cassests and and blank CDs. back then though, next to no one owned a CD burner, so the entertainment industry supported it. After all they are making more money, and if people want high quality music they still have to buy a cd. They where the ones that pushed for this.
In return for this levy, we canadians get the right to make to make private copies
    Quote from article
Every song on my hard drive comes from a CD in my collection or from a CD in someone else's collection which I have found on a P2P network. In either case I will have made the copy and will claim safe harbor under the "private copying" provision. If you find that song in my shared folder and make a copy this will also be "private copying." I have not made you a copy, rather you have downloaded the song yourself
in other words, i can't make you a copy of my cd then give it to you, but if i give you the original cd and you copy it and give it back, thats legal.

Now try and convince the RIAA of that.
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

RIAA should sue themselves. They have obviously downloaded the pirated content, and since it is not their property, but the property of their members, then they are pirates.

nope, filesharing is definately 100% illegal unless it is under the pretense that the band officially states that it is legal to share their songs. My brother has a criminal justice class in college, and his proffessor said that according to current law(DMCA), and even to a certain extent before that, p2p music sharing , through burning CD's and giving them away, or trading online(or the old bbs in the late 80's) is as illegal as shoplifting the CD(therefore the request for a 10 year prison sentence for filesharers, which is what shoplifters get now).

sorry, doesnt matter a damned bit. Copyright laws are trans-country affecting if the country is in an alliance and has an extradition treaty with a country. Such as, in canada, you could smoke and sell pot(you cant right now, but in a couple years you might), but if you sold drugs directly to a U.S. citizen we could nail your ass to.

for example, the country in singapore getting nailed by microsoft for selling mod chips, he was violating U.S. copyright laws, not Singapores.

you can smoke pot and buy it legally for medical use, secondly pot is pretty much decriminalized you cant be charged unless you carry more than 10 grams(police just wont press charges)...

And if i was busted for selling to an american in my own country like hell i am going to an american court... I would be judged by a canadian court and charged under our legal system

we could have you extradited, btw, i was not saying selling to an american that was in your country, but if you were doing mailorder deals you could be busted.

just like though for example you make a program that sells for 300 dollars, and some country of 400 computers buys one copy and uses it on all their computers at once, you are being pirated out of 119700 dollars

not if canada does not recognize the act as criminal

did you even bother to read the articles? where do they mention software? where do they mention anything about selling anything for money?

File sharing is legal. File sharing copyrighted material is illegal. That's the thing most americans can't understand.
