    netscape wrote their own renderer. Opera wrote their own renderer. Why does a multinational corporation like microsoft have to steal one written by students?

    They didn't steal it. If they stole it, it wouldn't have any credit in their about box.

    They didnt' write DOS either. Bought that, too. The less time they spend coding things, the more time they have to make money off of them.

    who cares about linux? you want to see some fine code? look into BSD! Do you know how much BSD code is in windows and an in Linux? Hex edit some application and look for "regents of the university of california"... BSD brought you the internet as you see it now...

    It is all completly legal too since the BSD lisence recognizes true freedom and allows anyone to take their source as long as they give credit to the original programmer...

    $500 million is peanuts. This happened at a time when it was not sure if MSIE would win the battle against netscape. Who knows where IE would be now, without that "stolen code".
