    Vision Prescription

I have just completed my evolution to geekdom. I got glasses this week. Only one of my eyes is blurred so its just plain ol glass on the left side. Does anyone understand the meaning of the numbers though? When people talk about 20/20 vision, what does that mean? More specifically, the numbers written on my glasses are 48/18/140. What's that?

I believe that 20/20 means you can see at 20 units of distance what you should be able to see at 20 units of distance.

I've never seen three numbers written though. Perhaps it means you can see at 48 feet what you should be able to see at 18 feet... are you far sighted?

that's what she said. But my two eyes are different. My left eye has no blurring at all.

How many times did your mother tell you not to stick your finger in your eye? Did you listen? No; you stuck your finger in your right eye. Now look what happened.

edit: Oh, and the vision in each eye is normally at least a little different, because there is a dominant eye, but your more extreme.
    Away.

I was guessing that 48/18/140 meant (right eye) / (left eye) / (something else) as in 48/20 on right, 18/20 on left. Does that sound right?

ok, so based on what I'm seeing on the web and at the link you posted:

I have 20/48 on the right side and 20/18 on the left side. 140 means nothing to me.

It's how smart the glasses make you look, in IQ points.

You could, you know, ask the person who wrote the prescription for you.
