    Do people without the mark on the 1st day who sin the the 3rd day gain the mark? And if people who have (before the proclamation) sinned ask for and receive absolution for their sins does the mark vanish?
    Or on the first day are you marked or unmarked forever?

    Its not implicit in the question and is the deciding factor on if there is a single solution.

    phew
    atlast natase believes me

    thanx Beta.. for all the help

    and dbaryl
    Then again, this is all in theory, and that all sinners must be extremely logical/good at math...
    ya i said they were super intelligent beings didnt i??(first post)

    also i am a lil to the blame for a some ambiguity in the riddle

    i had just heard this told t9 me and that was abt an yr back and that had considerably less details and no story form

    i should have drafted that first post more thoughtfully probably offline but i just filed in the boxes as fast as i could so ....

    neway i guess this was fun i'll try to post another one next week but thats not a promise.....

    ok

    So knowing how it is strongly solved for seven.
    thats true
    .. imagine a group of eight and all eight of them being sinners. They would all not be there on the eight day which would mean that they would have left on the seventh day.
    ya so whats wrong with that 7 persons stop coming back after 7 days
    sunday mon,tue,wd,thurs,fri,sat

    and eight peepl would come back on the eight day ie sunday and stop coming on monday.... so whats it that you are saying???

    I also say that the structure of the priest leaving and the people following on the first day doesn't definitively make that day as an exclusion from the "week". This could make it the first day of the week that will end on Saturday.

    Inevitibly this would make for six members that are sinners instead of eight. (or if you combine the two... would be seven again )
    i said after a week so that must mean next sunday so i think the wording was just strong enuf (i hope)

    Also just to really be pedantic, but its been a bad week, it was only forbidden to tell someone that they had the mark, so by only slightly stretching the rules, you could tell people without the mark they didn't have it, and have the whole thing solved in just one day.

    Easily thwarted by "It is forbidden to discuss the mark with anyone", though, rather than you must not tell someone they have they mark.

    Next week eh? Cool. I really did have way too much fun with this (just a tad misleading) one.

    >>so whats it that you are saying???

    Saying nothing really... it is just a mind meander.

    I was thinking of how eight people could be sinners with the given data and how six people could be sinners with the given data. Depending on comprehension.

    Obviously (now) the correct answer is seven, but I think it is fun to try to delve into other possibilities.... like the "million man theory" by Justin W and the "tell the non-markers theory" by RobS. There is certainly a smart group of people here...

    Actually... I just found out that the definitive answer absolutely must be EIGHT and not SEVEN!!!!

    How do you like me now!

    hhahahah

    There are still days 0-7 (making eight days total like before), but the first line gives away a distinctive clue as to why it has to be eight and cannot be seven.

    Here is the first line again for your perusal...

    "among those of you who have gathered here are some sinners"

    Can you figure out why it is EIGHT and definitely not SEVEN?

    Wait a sec...you're assuming that only a handful of people wonder why the other has come back, what if the entire church does? Then nobody comes back! End of story, they're all goin to hell for never going to church again

    I've also discovered an alternate solution:

    Someone asks the other "If I have a mark, be silent, but if I don't then tell me I don't" well then you've corrupted the priest's idea of telling the other person they have one. They're not saying a word, they're just staying silent!

    Oh, I've just read the above posts and one or two of them sound very farmiliar to what I've just said...Oh well. That'll teach me to read other posts before verbalizing (so to speak ) my own ideas.

    Either you guys didn't read my last posts, didn't care, or didn't figure out the answer.

    So I will go ahead and tell you why it cannot be seven and should be eight.

    According to the first line, the priest said that their are "some" sinners.

    Some is definitely to be considered more than one.

    So....

    Let's assume two on day zero (the day the preist said everything).

    Sinner one would look at sinner two and and not see any other sinners. He would figure out that he is a sinner because "some" people in the group are sinners.

    Neither of them would come back on day one.

    So with one day two sinners would realize they are sinners and would be gone. Then it is N+=1 from there through the rest of the week.

    Mon = 2
    Tue = 3
    Wed = 4
    Thur = 5
    Fri = 6
    Sat = 7
    Sun = 8
