Cuba Jamming US Signals Into Iran

I saw a little headline on CNN about Cuban satellites or something purposely jamming wetsern TV into Iran the other day - I thought that'd be DEFCON 1 instantly, but I haven't heard about it since. Anybody know what happened?

When did Cuba launch a satellite?

Look at these two reports on the subject. Note the differences with how the Cuban governments involvement is portrayed. Then pick which one is the US news report.........

"The Voice of America condemned the "unprecedented" jamming in a formal statement yesterday, describing it as a "deliberate and malicious" effort "to block Iranian audiences from gaining access to truthful news and information."
"Cuba is obviously doing this at the behest of the mullahs in Iran," said Kenneth Tomlinson, chairman of the VOA Board of Governors. For technological reasons, he said, "Iran needed someone in this hemisphere to do its dirty work." "

    http://www.washtimes.com/world/20030...4937-2635r.htm

"Havana said it only jammed broadcasts by US-funded Radio and TV Marti, which the Bush administration expanded this year to support opposition to Cuban President Fidel Castro.

It appeared to be a case of cooperation between two ideologically distinct governments which Washington dislikes."

So its OK for the US government to fund propaganda against the government of a country but not OK for the government of that country to stop the transmission?

    toucht area.

the gov has a right to do that, it could help to prevent a revolt and save their lives(rulers).

but dont you think its better for ours to come across? i was never big on the whole cuba deal, but it doesnt sound like hes hitler-like(feel free to mention something here), but it doesnt sound like he will be ruler of the year either. you cant blame us for tring either.

we always tend to be the lesser of two evils.....

I'm in a bit of a hurry right now, so I can't go through and get specific quotes. YOu guys have made a couple of suggestions about why it's no threat - if we can't get an American slanted news (and don't deny it - every country has their own slanted news), there's the potential for Iran disliking us unfairly (or, still). Also, if they can do this, they can disrupt, but probably not stop, American military communications, and there's no reason for them to do this, so maybe it's for reasons we can't think of. Problem right there.

I'm not sure if it was a satellite, but they mentioned it on the news, and I was wandering if anyone had seen the same thing and then some.

im not trying to insult the people, but hijaking our satellites wouldnt be that easy for them.

its something to keep in mind, but i think most people wouldn be surpirsed to hear about that happening.

if it did happen, encryption. there are a couple of places that could break ours(it would take awhile but probally could be done with a nice sized budget) but i cant see cuba being able to pull that off. i cant really see the middle east pulling that off.

plus we have a couple of them, things can be routed.

im not glued to the news channel, are you sure this isnt the florida station incident?

I don't see any kind of correlation between Western TV and some of your concerns about military communications - they're completely different transmissions(it is also their right to block military transmissions if they want, and whats the harm if they do? It's likely more secure if they do. Plus, how would they know it's military? It's a useless concern). Also, it is that countries right to attempt to remove their citizens abilities to get American Television. In Canada it is illegal to purchase your satellite subscriptions from U.S. companies and the RCMP can remove your C-Band Satellite from your possession for doing so(Normally I would guess a fine is issued and your service cut off, though).

Cuba may have good reasons for cutting off U.S. transmissions. Example: Cuba not making enough profit for their own television networks.

Cuba's not doing it to their own citizen's. Iran is not a colony of Cuba. Unless CNN really is that biased not to say anything... But since it is most likely not, even if they do have a right to, and even if it would surprise us if they could, it's still a concern that they would. First, they may not want western opinions in Iran. If that's the case, they're expecting to be in a war. If that's the case, so should we. Second, they can. If we're underestimating their abilities this much, and it turns out that they can jam signals like that, maybe we ought to reevaluate them. They've had a lot of ties to terrorism, illegal activity, and nuclear weapons. Get off the satellite thing, because I never said it was satelites. Pay more attention to the phrase, "or something". For all I know it could be radial signals.

    OK.
Cuba is jamming US signals going to US satellites and blocking the signal on the ground. Cuba is not in any way using any satellites.

It is blocking US government funded propaganda radio and TV beamed into Cuba. It admits this.

"Havana said it only jammed broadcasts by US-funded Radio and TV Marti, which the Bush administration expanded this year to support opposition to Cuban President Fidel Castro."
    ABC News Aust.

Dosen't a country have the right to decide the material available on TV and radio? To filter out programming it considers unacceptable (ie porn)?

If Cuba was beaming anti US material into Miami would you complain if the US government stopped it?

    >>Cuba's not doing it to their own citizen's.
Yes they are. But thats not the impression the media wants you to get.

    >>Iran is not a colony of Cuba.

There is no actual proof that Cuba is responsible for the blocking of transmissions to Iran.
Cuba admitts to blocking signals to Cuba and denies blocking those to Iran. The US media just fails to mention this (as I pointed out) so Cuba looks worse.

    >>Unless CNN really is that biased not to say anything...
It is called SPIN, try looking at Google and finding new reports about this from outside the US (where it is a not a big story).

No one mentions that the US government continues to spend $23 million tax payers $ a year on a TV station no-one sees (and only runs for 4 1/2 hours a day).

Or that the transmissions interfer with the local radio and TV (they use channels bought and internationally registered to Cuba TV stations).

Or that they originate, in some cases, from US military aircraft.

Are illegal under International Law and the standards and regulations established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - a Geneva-based international agency. These laws were agreed upon by all States in the context of the International Telecommunication Union, particularly item 23.3 of its Radiocommunication Regulations, which prohibits television broadcasts beyond the national borders.

The reason you are hearing about this is because Cuba has complained to the International body and the US Federal Communications Commission.

Better that the evil Cubas are the villans for stopping the transmissions than the US government wastes $23 million.................

I watch Fox News all the time, Bill Oriely is the only person I know of who actually turns off his guest's audio so he can say what he wants to say. But really, who would watch the Oriely Factor if American Juniors was on?
