In the United States, a small minority of us are more concerned about what our government has begun doing after September 11 than what the terrorists, whom President Bush tells us are ready to strike at any moment just like our country's old enemies, the communists, will do to us next. Meanwhile, the majority of American voters may only know vaguely what is happening and are, thus, vulnerable to political rhetoric calling opposition to the PATRIOT Act, Total Information Awareness, etc. bad for national security and "dangerously close to giving aid and comfort to the enemy" (a common slur spoken by Republicans to Democrats and civil libertarians).
America may be descending into the police state President Bush claimed he wanted to liberate the Iraqis from, and the nation will only shout, "God bless America!" louder as it happens. I can't wait for when the president declares multi-party/multi-opinion politics unpatriotic and a potential threat to security and begins jailing political dissenters as potential terrorists who will be tried in a military tribunal without the protections of the Constitution or public inquiry.
