Linux/Mac/Windows/Other OS of choice?

Though you'd really have to be kind of paranoid to worry about that anyways

or kind of bored. i havnt really played with any networking tools but ping and dhcpd.

why do you like visual c better? why dont you like gcc?

look at kdevelop(screenshots here) it has a nice gui and a docs section(somthing like msdn, i like this better. msdn bugs me more than mna pages for some reason.).

you can run kde on windows too, so you could have both. you might have to compile it on your own thought(i tried it before and i dont remember seeing a binary).

Well, if you think a piece of software is spying on you, it wouldn't be particularly intelligent to ask that same piece of software if it was spying on you. Though you'd really have to be kind of paranoid to worry about that anyways.

Point is, if your actually paranoid about what your computer is transmitting, then it would make sense to log the traffic on something external to the system.

im assuming that that windows has some upperlayer, a layer that cant be played with. so windows might not let me see it.

plus i have no idea how i can checkout what i pcik up in windows. even as admin i dont think i can pick up everything.

another windows box should be able to pick up the firsts connections, but thats more annoying to me.

plus i have more faith in linux anyway, theres more tools for this kind of stuff.

i wish my laptop had 2 nics, i dont want to drag a old compter to my desktop....

I've always been a Windows fan.Worked with all of them,except Win2000 and Windows Server 2003 .Net(intend to)
I've been doing a lot of programming in .net.Nothing can beat .net combined with XP.
But,my syllabus now demands that I learn Unix.I'll cheack out the environment in the college lab.If I like the concept of command-line programming,I'll probably buy the CD's of Red-Hat Linux.Everyone's shouting its great.I wanna try it out too!

Anyway, XP + Win98 + RHL + FreeBSD5 here...but FreeBSD5 is wanting me to get rid of it...it's not even stable. Should of gotten 4.8 really....

also bookworm, guess what most of the internet runs off of?

for minor things windows is alright, its way simpler. but if its important, you want braging rights or if your just a nerd you need a unix*.

Windows 3.1 - Awsome system for older hardware and OLD computers. Uses mouse and has decent software installed to keep you entertained at how much has changed since DOS.

Windows 95 Beta - Try to install it on anything more than a 3 GB drive and you'll see why its a beta.

Windows 95 - GREAT SYSTEM ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, If you have no brain. You can screw Win95 up more than you could EVER mess up Linux. Even rm -rf / won't mess you as bad as running Win95 for a year.

Windows 98 - Go on a P2P Client and find a vid named win98 crashing. That's how bad it is, it crashed on National television for its debut. Poor Bill

Windows ME - ME = More Errors, this is by far the worst yet. I lost 1 really good 40 gb to this thing.

Windows 2000 - THE BEST WINDOWS YET!!!! Windows 2000 rarely crashes, has decent security and has minimal issues with playing with Linux. There was an issue with the clipboard tho. Anyway, if you use windows, use 2k!!!! Professional is the best for home use. I recomend this tho:
Dual Boot win2k and win98. Give win98 about 4-5 Gigs and give the rest to Win2k so you have a little space to play games cuz I know everyone gets that urge now and then.

Windows XP - I haven't dared go near the thing after I saw what it did to my friends comp. People like it, I HATE IT! The RAM usage is extreme, the resources it sucks dry is insane plus a lot of the options I want to change aren't there anymore, however it makes a better client than ME, 98, 95.

RedHat Linux - The Best There Is and EVER WILL BE
PERIOD. Customisable to the extreme, great packages, only thing I don't like is that everything is a binary install. But thats easy, just reinstall what you want to compile for best performance. Great for Servers, Clients, Workstations, Clusters, you name it!

Mandrake Linux - Really good too. Had only a little difficulty getting used to.

SuSE Linux - The best for a workstation using X.

Customising your own Linux - The best performance wise but will cause many problems later on unless you're good. I recomend learning how to be a pro at Kernel mods before you try to make your own Distro. I made a LYNUXDISTRO but it turned out really bad and basically the only thing left is the pride that I did it. Source is gone, Software assembly is gone, everything. RedHat is better anyway.

BSD - A Supremely Unique and great OS. Really good for networking.

Macintosh Power PC (before OS X) - CRAP

Macintosh OS X - Really really really good, almost as good as RH Linux. But if you want to have something for the family to use and don't want the risk of being an idiot and jepordizing your system, then use OS X. BTW: OS X uses a BSD Kernel so it has a Unix-Like environment.

uh- Can't really think of any more OSs to comment on...

OMG Brian! No wonder the uptime has been affected!
As days are passing by,I feel the need for me to get into Linux is increasing.As I've mentioned earlier,I'll work with Unix first.But 2 querries-
Are graphics in Linux as good as in XP?
Also,they say Windos is a 32 bit system.What does it mean.Microsoft has also announced that its next version of Windiws will be a 64 bit one,making it twice as fast.What bit system is Linux based on?

64 bit wouldnt make windows twice as fast. it will give you more ram and registers.

linux graphics is just as good as windows. you use photoshop linux guys use gimp(im not big on this kind of stuff). some movie productions companies are moving towards linux.

plus almost all linux stuff is free.

linux is a good way to start things off, it will make it alot easier than playing with a old unix or a bsd(bsds are good, but some linux distros almost n00b proof linux).

Gimp is more like the X11 version of ms paint than photoshop. Use Photoshop with WINE rather than the Gimp. The Gimp still needs work.

I can play games just fine on Win2K Pro.
