I have to give those bands credit for some talent. It definatly isn't their ability to play guitar. They know what people like and their best bet of makig it big is playing allot of power chords and screaming about being misunderstood. And they make loads of money doing it. I wish I could become rich that easy.

Zakk, get "Ball and Biscuit" from White Stripes' latest album. I think you'll agree he's got a little guitar talent, and it's not whining about being misunderstood.

I was using The White Stripes as a example of the first word in name. I agree he has talent and knows how to rock without a bass player. ( 7 Nation Army really had some people thinking he got one hehe) But most bands use the amazing fiersome POWERCHORD!

    Definition

Powerchord-A simple chord using 2 or 3 fingers in an easy formations This "hard" chord is often found on the stage of "Punk" bands of the new age. They are often repeated over and over in all of their songs. Although they are used by every band some ''no talent'' band love them.

Maybe you're listening to the wrong kind of punk if you're mentioning bands like The Ataris, The Vines, The Hives, the whoever! All those bands listed suck, imo. However, not many bands are punk nowadays. It's more like post-indie rock and other new made up genres like that. For good bands that for one reason or another fall under the category of punk by the general public check out these ones:

Brand New -1- Jude Law and a Semester Abroad, Last Chance to Lose Your Keys, Failure by Design, Magazines

Counterfit -2- Better Late Than Never, Feel the Ride, From Finish to Starting Line, Sleepwalk -

The Early November (there's one of your 'The's lol) -3- All We Ever Needed, Ashala Rock, Everynight's Another Story, Come as You Are

Fairweather -2- If They Move Kill Them, South Street 1am, Young Brash Hopefull, Soundtrack to the Ride

Finch (gone mainstream but the songs on the radio have been changed to appeal to larger audiences but the older versions of their songs are WAY BETTER!) -4- Without You Here, What It Is to Burn, Stay With Me, Perfection Through Silence

Further Seems Forever (ex singer used to be Chris Carrabba of Dashboard) -2- Just Until Sundown, The Sound, Pride War

The Get Up Kids -5- Red Letter Day, Close to Me, High as the Moon

Matchbook Romance -2- The Greatest Fall of All Time, Save Yourself, Hollywood and Vine

Over It -1- Fall, Worry Bomb, Nothing Serious, Wrong Way

Park -2- Swell, At Breakneck Speed, The Ghost You Are, Trivet

Saves the Day -5- All Star Me, Freakish, Cars and Calories, Hold

Senses Fail -3- The Ground Folds (original and acoustic), Free Falling Without a Parachute, Stephen, Dreaming a Reality

The Starting Line -6- Best of Me, Three Is a Charm, Saddest Girl Story, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

Taking Back Sunday (gone mainstream) -2- You Know How I Do, Cute Without the 'e', Timberwolves in New Jersey, You're So Last Summer

Thrice -4- Deadbolt, Kill Me Quickly, Under a Killing Moon, Trust, Betrayal is a Sympton

Thursday -4- Cross Out the Eyes, Paris in Flames, Understanding a Car Crash, Porcelain, For the Workforce Drowning

Ticker Tape Parade (local band in AZ) -2- Stand Up No Show, Sore Eyes

The Used (have gone mainstream already) -2- Box Full of Sharp Objects, Blue and Yellow, Poetic Tragedy, The Taste of Ink

1 - a fast pace style of indie play with a bit of pop-punk influences

2 - an indie style of play that at times reaches a faster pace while reaching almost reaching a hard stance at peaks and at times will slow down quite a bit

3 - an indie style of play that varies like 2 does except reaches harder peaks

4 - a harder style of play that has primarily indie influences

5 - a slower paced sound with a lot of emo and indie fluences but at times can pick up the pace

    6 - a typical pop-punk sound except they're actually good

There's quite a big list that should give people a chance to listen to a wide variety of music that as said before the general public lists under punk.

*sorry the definitions aren't exact and can be quite broad at times

Yeah, but TechWins had to prove his street cred by posting bands most people have never heard of.

PS Thursday's pretty darn mainstream now, too.

You know what's really rad? With punk music, the singers are
    interchangable.

Why won't punk die? It's such crap; nothing more than a gimic.

    yeah, edited quote
Those bands aren't that unusual govt. I have songs by four or five of those bands on my computer, and I've heard of a couple of the others. Further Seems Forever isn't great... Senses Fail and Taking Back Sunday are alright.
    Away.

Poor grammar is atrocious enough in a post, but poor grammar in the title of a post exemplifies the error to an even greater extent. People really ought to proofread their posts before submitting them.

The roots are hip-hop... saw them on chappelle's show

Black Sabbath impacted the metal scene, pretty much by starting it. Rock has been around for longer, though, and much more credit can be given to the Beatles than Black Sabbath.

    Post-modern neo-classical trancefolk
    Kinky.

Actually, I have a CD which fits into that genre...Days of the New, green album... although it's not really post-modern

I'm more of a band person than a genre person. My (legally owned) CDs are from these bands:
Black Sabbath - (just a mix album)
    Soundgarden - 3 albums
    Morphine - alternative jazz
Pearl Jam - (see avatar, sig)
Modest Mouse - punk, good guitars, semi-grunge
Days of the New - all 3 albums
    Monster Magnet
    Tool - just lateralus
    Everlast
    Rage against the Machine
Metallica - S&M, and justice for all
    Stabbing Westward
Diamond Head (80's metal, metallica's inspiration)
    Rammstein

And some others I haven't mentioned that I recommend:
    Audioslave
    Dandy Worhals
    Jane's Addiction
    REM
    Descendants
    Nirvana

Yeah, but TechWins had to prove his street cred by posting bands most people have never heard of.
You know it; I'm a hardcore balla! No, I was just trying to show some bands that people might want to try listening to. I have no 'street cred', so it would be quite hard for me to prove it. Not to mention, blackrat is right, a lot of those bands are fairly well known by now. You're also right that Thursday is becoming more mainstream, but at least they're not trying to change their sound like some bands do (*cough*Finch*cough*). Honestly, though, listen to some of those bands and see if you like them.

Zakk, you're right; Operation Ivy is more true punk than a lot of newer stuff.

Why won't punk die? It's such crap; nothing more than a gimic.
Maybe it relates to the same reason why you're still alive? Also, there isn't much real punk around; it's post-indie rock like I said (lol). I'm laughing, because I know it's pointless to even call it that, but that is the real name for most of it nowadays.

Oh yeah, another sweet band is Smashing Pumpkins, but they're obviously not punk. There is this new song that is played on the radio that starts off exactly like a Pumpkins song. It throws me off everytime and gets me thinking it's a Pumpkins song coming up. No bueno!
