recording sound from your computer

Is there a free downloadable program taht is able to catch what is coming out of the sound buffer and write a new .mp3 or .wav file from it?

For example, if I'm using windows media player radio and wanted to record the song, but not with an external device like a microphone because that'd be crappy quality.

Or if I put effects on the song, like higher speed in media player, or other things. How could I record this in good quality? There's got to be a way....anyone know?

I just wrote something similar on another thread.
You can buy soundforge or wavelab with this you can record everything and make some cool effects on it...
Well effects are very limited with these kind of programs they can
reverb,vibrato, pitch tuning, reverse,volume,echo, cut, copy, paste, mix, fade out, fade in, crossmix (or cross-over whatever its called), anyhow its very limited but for something semi-pro its worth buying it.
And o yeah you can also save it to formats like wma,mp3,wav and many many other formats.
Just google soundforge and visit their official site.

I have it too and i find it quit amusing fiddling around with it, i even used it for school when we needed to simulate a radio talk show (wich was fun to record).

And if you set up soundforge correct you can record everything you play on windows media player and at the same time use the microphone. This way you can have karaoke songs playing in WMP and sing it in using the mic while its recording both voice and music (aint that cool )
