    Trying to learn guitar

    hello folks,

I am trying to learn guitar for the first time by myself and am looking for tutorials and some mini-songs to learn. is there anyone here who might have good references and tutorials? where do you think i should get started if i want to learn on my own?

i must add that i have done quite a bit of research on the internet and although have come up with a little bit of stuff, im still looking for more and perhaps better (easier) ones out there.

    please give me a shout!
    tnx,
    Ben

i tried looking up drums tabs once, all i could find was guitar stuff. theres more than enough stuff out there!

look for tabs. they normally come with a key. theres not alot of sheet music online, it bugs me since i find it easier to read.

Just a suggestion when searching tabs on the internet make sure you print out the right one.
This is what i always do i let the song play while im playing this so called "right tab" then you see in a flash wether its wrong or right.

You could try and play these songs they arent too hard too play and kinda lol.

3 doors down-Kryptonite (always the same but after a while with distortion)
linkin park -in the end (although this is done with a keyboard you can find those tabs with ease)
nirvana - lake of fire (only powerchords so that isnt 2 hard)

And if your getting better and faster you can try metallica- One
this song just rox when you play it on the guitar (although i still cant follow that fast solo )

try'n google tabcrawler and tabfinder (i think )

OOh before i forget Everlast-Babylon feeling is also great... especially the santana piece at the end .

Have fun, that is if you like these songs :d

Find a teacher in your area and take a few lessons. Your skills will improve at a much quicker rate than trying to learn on your own. Or, try to hang out at the local guitar shop and get guys to show you licks.
I suggest starting with classical. Although you may not like the style, it will teach you technique and make any other style easier to learn.
And check out www.harmony-central.com, that is where most of my 'education' came from (along with OLGA).
When you think you're getting good, go to www.tabpigs.org and try learning a song from there.

I found the best way to learn was private lessons. I tried books and online but its just allot harder without someone to show you all the little secrets.

I second that, you need someone who can tell you nifty lil trix that come in handy etc etc...

I followed 2 years guitar lessons (private) unfortenately the lessons were only once in a week and with a duration of 40 mins...
But you would be suprised how much you learn in these short periods.

PS: if i have any language errors in this message then its due to this weird looking beverage im drinking right now.

    HI,

You should have some private lessons, because a lot of the time people who decide to learn by themselves learn the wrong way, and then can't play advanced stuff because they don't have the correct style. Even if you just had 3-4 of them you will be surprised at what you learn.

$$$$ tabs, learn chords. Jimi hendrix said something like "learn chords and everything else comes from there".

oh and www.guitarnoise.com is a good site for info.

This is my favorite site for scales and chords (not that I really even
play guitar. Just play with it while I'm watching television):

www.guitarists.net is an awesome site for guitar. They got tabs, chords, scales, a message board, tutorials, lots of links, and shopping.

I've been playing guitar for about 6 months, and I am getting the hang of it, although I don't consider myself to be that good. I can play the intros to a lot of songs, and that's about it .

Another good, easy song would be Angel's Son by Sevendust. Some of the slides are hard if you are just starting out, but it is a pretty easy song to learn. I've got the intro to it almost flawless, the chorus is shaky and the main part of the song I got down, but not that well. I've only been playing this song for a few weeks though.

One question: what is a hammer? I tried to learn Nothing Else Matters from Metallica, but I don't know how to do a hammer, so I stop whenever I encounter one

I hope youll understand my broken explain about what hammering is.

On a tab there mostly displayed as a "9h" for instance then you take a finger and just press it down on this fret very hard but beware you have to make sure you hit the string just on the iron of the fret and that your finger comes down 90° with the surface of the guitar... And when you hammer a note with your finger you dont have to play it with the other hand down below.

I hope you understand my bad explanation, my english just six when it comes down to explaining something you would mostly explain with some object with you.

Anyhow try it out and you'll see.
Oh and yeah most of the time with hammer on i just put on my distortion for a sec (with this footswitsch) this way i dont need to really HAMMEr on it and i can just hammer on it...
