"The Messenger Service"

    I've got Windows XP (I heard it had security issues, so I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it). When ever I'm connected to the internet, a couple of time per hour, windows will pop with the same title as this post, and advertize things. I believe they work on IP address, but is there anyway I can block those? They'll pop up without me even viewing a site.

    is it loaded on startup?

    start->run->msconfig->startup tab

    you dont need anything in there normally, the registry one you might want to keep.

    When all else fails, read the instructions.
    If you're posting code, use code tags:
/* insert code here */
hey,

    somebody suggested this to me to kill all pop-ups but it never worked on my machine (i also have XP and am suffering from the same "disease" Sean -- although it worked on theirs:

    Start -> Run -> Services.msc -> Messanger -> (right click to properties) -> start up type (change to disable)

    give it a shot and let me know if its working on your machine. tnx.

    Well I'll have a look on those two sites, thanks. No, it's just when I'm in the middle of doing something. There's also a problem, that occasionally a gray rectangle will appear on my desktop, and cover 90% of the screen. The tab on the start bar has no title, and it doesn appear after Ctrl + Alt + Del.

    OK, I looked at those. Anyone know how I can disable the messenger service?

    I used to have the same problem as you and disabling messenger service fixed it. Can't remember which site I used, but google brought up this: http://www.lantalk.net/disable_messenger.php

    Sorry - I thought you meant for the messenger service. That problem's solved, but the grey rectangle is just 2d, no features.

    start---program---admin tools---services---messenger, properties.

    click manual then apply and click stop. Then change type from manual to disable, all done.

    Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah
