    ebook readers

I read a lot of things that I get in .pdf files, but I hate printing them, because they're long, it takes forever, and ink is expensive. I hate reading on the computer even more. So I was wondering if there were any people here that had one of those "ebook reader" things with the big LCD screen... I'm sure you've seen them on TV or something at least. Anyway, I was wondering if they supported pdf files, and how they are to read on. If they suck, I definitely don't want one... I ran a search on amazon.com, but it only turned up two of them, and there weren't many details. So... is it hard to read stuff on them (like reading on the computer) or is it easier (like paper)? Is it worth getting one?

Yuck. The screen on a PDA is so small... I tried reading The Illiad on my Palm Pilot (yeah, it's a crappy M105) and I found that it took forever because you're continually scrolling.

If its something I really want to read then I print JUST the sections I want to my laser printer. Ink is cheap, problem in the paper. My dad usually brings all this useless, already used paper. The backsides are clean though so I recycle the paper. Basically, I used up no paper -- that paper was gonna get thrown out anyways and it was free.

Speedy5, how do you like your laser printer? We used to have two of them, several years ago, but they were unreliable for getting good copies with ANY temperature variance in the room... it had to be 70 degrees almost exactly or you would get black streaks on the page... are they better now? Inkjet ink is way too expensive...

Cnet probably has some reviews and such.
The word rap as it applies to music is the result of a peculiar phonological rule which has stripped the word of its initial voiceless velar stop.

My laser printer is ~1997 and it was a cheap one too, only $350 to $450. Its awesome, prints a page every 6 seconds. The quality is superb meaning that I can print documents with font size of 2 to 3 and still be able to read it with a magnifing glass (600 dpi). Its realiable, never has failed. We've replaced the toner twice already (ink thing) because we print like 30 pages a week, regularly.

I don't get black stripes, I get stripes where the printer fails to print with much ink (but its still the ink is still visible). This happens when the printer isn't warmed up yet. After printing 2 more pages or so, it'll print just fine. We just recently got a quality color printer so I have it in my room, printing sources and computer e-books. Its great.

Its not an HP though , its a NEC SuperScript 660plus. It has no drivers for Windows 2000/XP but we found a 100% compatible driver from another printer so it works.

It just shows: you don't need an HP laser printer to be happy, you don't need to spend a lot of money on it.

Blimey I bought a 'Boxing Day Special' Samsung laser printer, in Dec (obviously) 2000.

Only cost me £99 instead of the sale price of £199. Normal price was £269. Tell you what, this thing knocks off pages like an F1 car. About 3 secs. Page goes in, next page goes in....etc.

The important thing is that I got a free spare toner cartridge in the box, and I am only just onto it! So all the prints I have done have come from 1 cartridge. Must be a record as I print a lot.

Oh and it works when it is roasting and when it is freezing in the room. It doesnt care.
