OK guys, If you gonna burn it, I recommend the following:
download the dx8asdk.exe (or whatever it's called), and run it, it should decompress the whole set of files, ant the you burn these files, not the EXE.
Oh, and if you want good book suggestions, go with
Advanced 3D game programming using directX 7.0 by Adrian Perez and Dan Royers
Inside Direct3D, Microsoft press.
buy them both, I found them at amazon, and they are very good, but one complements the other, and likewise, this means that with just one, you can't have all the power (I would tell you which one to buy if you could only buy one, but since you have enough money to have a 60kbps connection, It's unnecessary)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't want to decompress the files becuase I read somewhere that you can't uninstall the components. And this isn't the comp I want to work on.

nonono, you got it wrong, when you decompress the files, you haven't installed them yet, you just get the setup files, you should copy those into your CD.
and yes, you can uninstall the components, I had to do so when I moved from 7.0a to 8.0a, and it worked perfectly
