seriously, games [developed online] that are in design for over a month will almost never be completed. games that take under 2 weeks to design and move into the coding stage have the best chances of being done...

because design docs are addictive... make you slow and lazy, and 'finish the doc'...

you can get Version 8.0a, but I think that as soon as version 9 comes out, we'll have to restart

you can download the SDK for free!, and it's just about 140Mb !!!
(took me abouth a month to download)

as for tutorials, you can see the examples which come in the SDK, they are very good to learn from, I learnt Windows programming with those tutorials! (well, the DirectX7.0a tutorials)

I can't find where the download is from those links? And we all probably have to agree on which we download so they are compatable, or something.

Now, anybody know of any DirectX tutorials? We should all agree on a good one so we are all on the same boat.

this is the link for the directx 8 sdk
there is no difference between the direct draw component of directx 7 and directx 8 (I think, don't know about directx9)

As for the tutorials, I only read Sunlight so I can't compare with anyone else

You guys will probably NOT want to move straight to DX9 as soon as it comes out. Remember, backwards compatibility is your friend, and sometimes the newest releases wreak havoc until good drivers, etc. exist for the new card.

I remember DirectX 8 had a lot of probs with certain cards when it first came out. DX9 will probably be more of the same...

Okay, here's my problem with downloading directx. Right now, I'm not on my computer (that I do work on and program on), I'm on another computer in my house that has the cable modem. I want to download it with the cable modem so it doesn't take a "month". Can I burn it to a disk, or something, and then put the files on my computer? Will that work?

I'm going to check out the tutorials now.

the first question is why aren't both of your computers connected to the cable modem?

to answer your question broadly, yes...

didn't mean to sound like a jerk...i would just go crazy if the computer on which i spent most of my productive time wasn't connected to a high speed internet connection (especially if i had access to one)...

my question is why does it take everyone a month. I don't have cable. Here is what to do.

    Start downloading
Go to bed (sleep) for a while
    Wake up
    Eat
    Download complete.
