    Remote control destruction - hmmm.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...ic/2999780.stm

I wonder how they'll do that, and how long afterwards, the same technology will spread to vandals. Lunacy, the guy is an idiot.

Re: Remote control destruction - hmmm.

trust senators to think up these genius ideas. people would just remove the destroy feature from their computer. If they were to do it remotely, just get a firewall and filter the destruction packets.

    sigh.

The problem as I see it is not that we couldn't come up with good laws and technology to back them but that the people making the laws have very little understanding of how the technology works. I found a stat saying the avg age in congress is over 50. Think about how many people you know over 50 that know how to even use computers for much more than email, or have any idea of networking or computer systems. If we're going to make laws that make sense in a hi-tech society, the avg age should be closer to 30.

    On side note:
I am so sick of the RIAA. It's time they woke up to technology and change their business models. Ofcourse it's probably too late for them because companies like Apple have already taken the lead. I do ultimately have faith that this whole situation will result in better music being made though. So that's the light at the end of the tunnel.

Just a side-note: The minimum age for senators is 30. The minimum age for representatives is 25.

Exactly, tgm. They have no clue how any of it would work. That's why they just float ideas by their technology consultants, which probably get silently laughed at. "What we need are sattelites...sattelites with lasers...BIG lasers...and...and..an' they target the computers of people running Kazaa automatically and send an EMP pulse to stop their illegalities!" "Oh....ok...we'll uhh...::chuckle:: get right on it."

But I'm happy with old technoboobs for senators - it means I can enjoy hours upon hours of copyright infringing music .

My grandad is over 50, and he's an amature 3d modeller. He has a dual Xeon setup and knows more than I do about computers.

    Generalisations are bad.

I'll be 50 in 3 and a bit years. I guess I'll have forgotten all this stuff by then though.

    Orrin Hatch is a dork.

It wasn't too long ago that Hatch praised Shawn Fanning. To
think that Napster had a purpose, or was created for any reason
other than downloading copyrighted songs -- that's just stupid.
He knew what it was used for, and it wasn't to hear "undiscovered
artists." Honestly, how can you search for a song by an undiscovered
artist if you don't know the song or the band even exists? He's
    just a weenie.

    http://web.ksl.com/dump/news/cc/napbyu.htm

Plus, he writes his own crappy songs. They played one of them
on the radio here. It was a patriotic rock song, and it blew so
much. It sounded like one of those songs that are played during
the credits of an 80s movie. You know, the over-produced, Bon-Jovi
type songs. Only this song was worse than Bon Jovi (yes, it's possible)
    It was just soo bad.

He's just trying to make a name for himself. The law will never pass. Similar to what McCarthy did, he's just trying to get fame (just in a less extreme case).

lol, that makes me want to cry to be an american, but then I remember something about a country (was it italy???) banning video games for a short period of time... Even if it were possible to do (maybe a feature built into windows?) the government would be brought to its knees by millions of DOS attacks, that's not considering the number of lawsuits that would occur.

I don't understand why he's only talking about music, illegal software and movie trade is bound to be an even bigger problem. A few weeks ago I needed a copy of windows 98 so I just used kazaa and got it with a cd key for free...

N.J. cable companies have the power not only to destroy your
television for pirating their signal, but after your tv is trashed
you will receive in the mail a penalty/fine for $1000 for theft of
services. I know one guy here at work who lost his tv and paid
the fine because he failed to install a filter in his black box.
    No. Wait. Don't hang up!

    This is America calling!
