the layout and GUI of .net alone makes it surpass 6.0 imo!
.net and 7 r the same thing
It would be senseless to purchase both. If you can afford it, and I bet about 90% of the people on this board probably couldn't afford it (That is not including student or educational versions)

If you don't want to buy xp, then you might want to just stick with 6.0.
Depends what you want to use it for- console programming? Console programmers don't really need .Net.
But .Net has a lot of nice features added onto 6.0, and like Rod said, the gui is better in .Net.
I'm not familiar with C++ with managed extensions, but that's the .Net version of C++ (if you want to use C++ in CLR enviroment). But I don't know anyone that codes in C++ with managed extensions anyways. .Net supports C++ with managed extensions, and regular C++(6.0 only supports regular C++). Again, not a needed feature if you're only going to code in C++.
That's the differences as far as I'm concerned. I use Visual studio.Net because I prefer C# to C++ when I code. Just my personal preference.

msvc.net is about 300% better than msvc.6. It is still not good enough tho. The next incarnation will be msvc7.1. All reports from friends who have tried the beta say it is now an excellent compiler. My friends have never used that word about an ms compiler before so i look forward to using it myself.

.net and V6 use different technology. .net doesn't run on anything except NT and XP whereas V6 will run on all platforms. But .net is newer and easier technology in some ways, once you get past the differences, and more powerful.
I believe if the .net framework is installed (it's an option on XP) the installation of a program is easier than programs written in V6.
