    Hmmm...

You sound just like me... about two months ago. I had been looking for a job for 1,25 years before I found something. Granted, I live in South Africa (with a 50% unemployment rate) but I don't think that was my problem.

See, I tried to get a job on my own. I did everything. I had great marks, I was dedicated. I had been programming for two thirds of my life. I was aggressive looking for a job. I sent my CV everywhere, and I delivered it by hand.

Then, finally I prayed. I practically fell down on my knees and begged God to show me a way out. My life had become a prison. Lo and behold - The very next day I got an interview... out of nowhere, THEY called ME. That monday I got the job.

I asked God why he took so long, and he gave me the following scripture - Deutronomy 8 & 9, esp. end of 9.

If you are an Atheist and you read this, just remember - Jesus loves you anyway!

The IT job market is at the moment in a small recession. Many graduates are leaving university here to find that they cannot find work. Im sure the situation will improve with time. Many companies are reluctant to take on new graduates because they generally have no real-world programming experience. Keep trying. Keep applying. In the meantime get yourself on a project or two at sourceforge.net and learn from other good coders while you await the letter inviting you for interview.I promise you that once in the door and you have a couple of years under your belt finding work becomes a whole lot easier.
Make sure your CV is clear and concise. Use bulletpoints to emphasise learnt techniques and languages. Make sure coverring letters are correctly spelt, short and to the point. Dont give up hope. Write speculatively to companies. Dont just apply for jobs you see. Check the it related websites for vacancies. Join it based employment agencies.
Free the weed!! Class B to class C is not good enough!!

First off, I don't mean to be rude at all. But perhaps they don't hire you because your resume has typing/grammer errors in it, or perhaps your format of your resume is not appealing. You could try hiring a business to create you a resume which may be more appealing. Here are some options I would consider if I were you:

-Work hard at any job possible to get enough money to start your own business. (If you cannot do it alone then find about 5 other graduates or starters to join you, you may become very sucessful using this approach. It's always worth the try.)

-Relocate yourself to another location or country.

-Find a large company that you could work for, find out who has an 'opinion that counts' such as a manager and then stalk him/her and run into them at places and try to get to know them (invite them to a bar, etc..), meanwhile giving them the impression that you are not after a job. After time tell them that you were thinking of quitting and if they could get you a job since their your friend. (This idea is far-fetched in a way, but you never know )

Pretty much wherever you are in the world right now, the IT sector is down. The general business climate is poor, and when it is, customers make do with what they've got and don't order new IT systems. No customers - no work - no hiring, indeed, maybe fire a few. Then you come along with no experience and compete for the very few positions available against seasoned professionals. Not difficult to predict the result really - you just have to keep trying. Use your time learning new skills to broaden your appeal.

Why is the IT sector down? What really happened? I mean, 5
years ago, 23 year olds were becoming billionaires overnight. Now
they're all bankrupt. How did things change so fast?

    >>> Why is the IT sector down?

As I said, the customers are not buying.

When the economy is roaring along, firms spend a fortune on new IT systems. The developers satisfy that requirement and maybe a little blue sky development to try to sell later. The software houses that specialise in selling software to software developers chuck out new versions of things. Everyone is busy, and buying.

The economic climate turns sour, the end user customers stop buying. They make do with what they have got. When there is no money going into the sector, there is no activity in the sector.

    Simple really.

its not just the IT sector, I mean in order for the economy to be healthy money must be moving. Think of it as the economy taking a masturbation break.

Finaly, a nice, straitforward answer that does great good for a certain person's "self-esteem."
The only good thing about freezing beyond feeling in the final Nordic ski race was that I couldn't feel that tumble I did going about 30 mph, maybe more.
On the other hand, not feeling any part of my body for 30 minutes was scary, especialy for my manhood.

    howdy,
Speaking as a business owner (engineering not IT) i can pick up on that attitude in one second, if after a person comes to me looking for an interview i feel like killing myself because of the mass depression dripping off of them they probably won't be invited back.
basically don't drag your ass into a place telling them how big of a failure you are by the way you act, this attitude can be picked up by how you carry yourself.
POSITIVE VIBES dude reek of positive look positive act positive BE positive, it may surprise you. and a little bit of prayer won't hurt either.

I don't like you very much. Please post a lot less.

Sure they would. Your attitude is much more important than how much you can bench press in the IT arena! Your intelligence won't cut it if you don't have the basic knowledge the employer needs.

Go back and read what M.R. said. That's the best reply to this thread.

And to answer the main question: "Am I a failure?" You are if you think you are. That attitude will keep you slinging burgers. Remember, Edison took 10000 trys before the lightbulb worked. Just keep at it!
