I've worked the graveyard shift here for about 15 years now.
It's not easy and a lot of the times I'm confused about what
day it is. I'll never get used to it like some people here I know.
They stay awake all night with no trouble at all. Some times I think I'm going to collapse because I'm so sleepy. But I like third
shift. Second shift sucks for obvious reasons, and first shift also
suck because all the bosses are around and I can't get on the
    Internet like I am now ( ).

Graveyard shifts aren't all bad, from what I understand my mom makes like 24 an hour normally, but when she works the dreaded graveyard shift she makes 32 an hour! (she works at a hospital or assassinates people or something, I can't remember)

My first job was 9 years ago when I was 13. I was washing dishes for £1.50/hr (times by about 1.4 to get the dollar value, I'll let you do the maths). There ain't no minimum wage here for youngsters.

Then I worked at a pub for a few years, waitering and washing dishes. Money was better £3.50 - £4.00 but I was a couple of years older by then. The best monkey job I did was on a kiosk at a putting green. Just sat there selling ice creams and taking money for putting. Had free rounds whenever I wanted, cool. Money wasn't quite as good as the pub, can't remember what it was.

And you know what? I saved every penny of it so that I could come to university. That's why I don't give the time of day to people who moan about tuition fees.

    It's capitalism, deal with it.

I think it's good stuff. I mean you are still at school right? Most school kids get paid poor wages to wash dishes. At least you get poor money for doing something you like and that you could actually mention on your CV.

Well see people get paid minium wage for unskilled labor, like washing dishes, picking fruit or whatever.

Coding takes knowledge, skill, education etc., so if you had to learn it all I think that a minimum wage payement is crap.

From the employers point of view, I would think that they would see anyone else could get an easier asembly line job for the same pay, so they would pay you more. That's the entire point of getting an eduction, to get higher pay.

I agree...it's crap...but I'm not really in a position to demand for more pay or anything. I don't need the money either..but that's not really the point. I've asked, and the funding is really tight...over 200 people have gotten laid off. In fact, the entire department in which I work except 3 people got laid off (so about 9/10 people)

If you're wondering I work for Philips at their NY research plant...who get all their money from outside sources, like grants etc..so it's pretty tight
