    Future of computers...

We all know that computers process binary code (1010...) and that it somehow (I don't know exactly) they send information to different components which do their required job. But how do you think computers will work in the future? Will we still use a binary system or will it evolve into something more complex?
Has someone already started developing a system that is completely different?

They've already built systems which worked in decimal. Although the ones i've heard of were pre-semiconductor/transistor era and worked mechanically. There's no practical reason to switch away from using binary, we can just keep adding levels of abstraction to achieve desired goals.
I read a quote somewhere which said "Most problems in computer science can be solved with another level of abstraction" or something similar.

I think most people seem to think quantam computers are the next step, but now they are completely worthless, they can decrypt stuff, but that's about it.

Computers will be everywhere, in your car, refrigerator, toaster, etc....

Your grandkids will look back on you like a dinosaur and say something like "You remember when computers were only desktops and laptops? Wow, you're old."

I even think that the desktop will eventually become obsolete, except in the areas that need extreme computing power.

THe major problem with laptops today is the limited battery supply. THat'd improve in the future.

Wireless i think is another major potential area.

Imagine where computers could be, and place them there. There you go, the future. Why plant trees in the city, when you can project them! In that case, why bother wall-papering your walls.. (I dunno, just an idea). "Hey, Dad... remember when you're stupid generation used to wet down paper with designs on them to glue them to walls... how stupid!" haha. Actually, I think that our generation will be quite used to the change; I don't think that it will be nearly like it is now with the young people knowing more than the older ones.

There are only 10 types of people in this world....

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Im taking a digital design course right now where you learn how to make the compenants of computers and how binary is used. I use to think that the whole idea of computers was far to complicated for us humans to have come up with so quickly (conspiracy!!) but now that I know how it works, I reallize its not as super technolocically advanced as i thought.

Ok, heres my attempt at a bland Idea to teach you a general idea how computers work (with binary!).

Ok, binary functions like this 0 and 1. You construct numbers, commands etc. all formed with binary. like 0001 = 1, 0010 = 2, 0011 = 3, 0100 = 4 etc. How oever your probably wondering how do these numbers make commands and words!!! well the numerical value of the binary digit is DECIMAL value. Decimal values are related to ascii charts (www.asciitable.com) and from the numbers we get letters.

Your wondering "How do we display this information" well this gets complicated becuase you have to know the circuitry side.

    Basics:
    a volotage of 2.5 to 5 is = 1, and 0 to .8 or something is a 0.

using gates (consisting of transistors) you create simple binary logic.
    1+0 = 1
1+1 = 10 (notice the increast in bits (0's and 1's) if you dont have enough bits to hold the answer, the MOST SIGNIFICANT BIT (left most 0-1) is lost.
    1*0 = 0
    1*1 = 1
Basic gates are AND (mult a * b), OR (add a+b), NOT (oppiste a) and a few more that require a bit more explination.

Ok, say youve created a circuit where bits (voltage pulses in values of 0's and 1's (0-0.8v and 2.5-5.0v) are being passed around. Eventually you want to display out put. So you use circuitry and gates to determine what combinations of bits are presant and perform specific actions.

suddenly I realize I'm not gonna beable to explain this all (even at this basic level) with out spending most of my night here. Go sign up for ECN120 or CSC120 (or what ever cource offers Digital Design Fundamentals) to be amazed.

I've already built my instructional processor, 8 BIT memory (and a lot more than 8 bits too, but Im proudest of it), multiplexers, demultiplexers etc. etc. MUCH FUN!
    c++->visualc++->directx->opengl->c++;
(it should be realized my posts are all in a light hearted manner. And should not be taken offense to.)

    lol, thats great!

i (also) think computers will be everywhere in the future, we'll be telling our grandkids about how we once "connected to internet with a phone line"

In the future computers will be illegal. By 2054, due to the high gun mortality rate, the NRA will have singlehandedly caused the outlaw of every possible item that may cause people to want to kill other people (with guns). with the ban of everything in place, except of course for guns and ammo, gun crime theoretically, should be abolished. You could, of course, ban guns, but then that ex movie star will get ........y.

Analog computers have already existed, but they sucked.

I have one question to ask you. Do you even know why we use binary over decimal in most electronics? If you do, you'll understand why computers will probably stay with binary for a LONG time.

Computers don't have fingers to count on.
