Guidance Councilor (rant...sort of)

after reading a post by dalren i was curious about this and your guy's experiences.... a lot of guys here are in high school so i just figured it would be something we could all talk about

personally, i have, in indiana where i went to high school they implimented this new system for education called core 40, supposed to be the basic 40 credits that will better prepair you for college, because of my guidance councilor's lack of understanding (and i'll admit my own) of the system i had to take 3 extra classes to get this freaking stamp of approval on my diploma.

I have never had a problem with my GC. In fact, quite the opposite, hes a great GC and has saved my ass more than a few times.

I haven't had problems with the GCs. Since I moved here, started here junior year, my GC has been nice to me. He's really cool. The admin is nice to me too.

We started this new thing, Senior Option. Basically it is either 1st or 7th period off. Well, I wanted to drop a class, and I already had 1st off, so they gave me 7th off as well. But I'm also taking 5 APs, so that influenced it a lot.

My guidance counselor's quite helpful. She helped me rearrange my schedule so that I only have classes in the first 3 periods of the day, so I'm outta school @ 12:15.

My GC pretty much ruined my life, not going to give you the 10 page report outlining just how that happened. But, it did.

wow i guess i was wrong, i figured everyone had been screwed at some point...i dunno, i know they mean well, and it sounds like most of em are pretty good...but i just cant get over having to repeat geometry because i wasnt in the more advanced class.

You shouldn't put too much blind faith into a guidance counselor.
They are basically just former teachers who are too lazy to teach
and go the GC route simply for the money.

I was a total FU in high school, so I had no real use for guidance,
but I once met one of my sons' GC, and my everlasting impression of the guy is that he's a total idiot, a legend in his own
mind, and knows nothing about nothing. I made the same evaluation to my wife about this guy and she and agreed. Even
my son agreed with me, a rare occurrance, indeed.

I'm not knocking all of them, but just warning you all to enter
your CG's with eyes and mind wide open.

Is it normal that you have a GC?? Coz where i live we dont have such things..... well at least i never see him or her... if we even have one around at school...

In my school, each grade had a counselor. That's all.

WTF each grade.... im doing my last year of school and this year i saw some lady who was telling about "What are the gateways to a job" or something in that direction. And where you could go to study but each grade?!?

my grade has 2 councilor, both part-time.

but then, my district has 4th grade band, a gym teacher for each elementary school, and recently gave new computer to all of the teachers, because we were not one of the most wired schol distrects in New York state. And there is talk about raisin taxes because the school district is facing a huge debt/deficit. Oh, and i dont believe our state has passed a buget in more than ten years.

My GC is always just mis informed and I don't listen to her, despite her attempts to do well.

A common example, I go in to ask her how competitive RIT is (www.rit.edu), and you know what she says? She says it's as competitive as MIT...I got a catalog from them (RIT), and come to find out RIT accepts more than 70%, while MIT accepts about 9%. Yeah, right, and I'm the 5th beatles member.

We have GCs based on last name. Like, if you're last name is between A - G, you're counselor is so and so, and etc.

Silvercord, I agree. GCs don't always know everything. That's why I didn't ask them which college I should go to or what they recommended.

But also, I'm not sure if RITs application numbers are the same, but it depends on the number of applications and the number that they can accept. i.e. if MIT has say 20k applicants, and only accept 1600, then that could account for 9%. And if RIT has say 2500 applicants and can accept 1600, then that accounts for 70%. Again, I haven't looked at the numbers recently, so I'm not sure if they have similar number applicants. It plays to number of applicants and size of school, and size of freshmen class expected.
