    War ethics

This is not a political discussion on war, nor is it a should we or shouldnt we be at war thread.

I am curious to some of the rules of war. Especially this:
If enemies are holding your men prisoners of war; in the attempt to rescue them, can you kill the enemies in the process?

Its true they are the bad guys, but they are holding your surrendered soldiers, maybe not well but at least alive.

I would very much like to know what the geneava convention says about this sorta thing.

PS. LMAO. I typed this up 4 hours ago before I went to school, and coulda SWORN i posted it. When i got to school to check up on the thread for replies I couldn't find it. I was seriously about to post some major hate and anger threads about deleting threads for no reasons. But then it came to me the possibility I didnt actually submit.... Boy was I feeling quite the fool when I got home just now, moved my mouse, the monitor turned back on and there sits the thread. This is all irrellivant, but it just goes to show you what waking up early does to your mental prowess.

Um... yeah... You're at war, right? What are you supposed to do, pop around a corner and say "Hey, we found your secret hiding place! Give us our guys back now! Wanna go get a beer later?"

If you were some frightened conscript that really doesn't want to be there, that approach may well appeal.

You mean if you were the conscript guarding them? I can see that, yeah. Then again, I doubt the people manning POW camps (generally full of people who'd rather not be there) are exactly timid...

I'm just saying there ARE rules of war.

It just kinda seems odd to me. I mean if I knew that SAVING the lives of enemy troops by accepting there surrender ment I would probably die whey people come to save them... Id kill them all.

And consider this: There are rules for KEEPING POW's. Thanks to the geneava convention, to break these rules is to be commiting a war crime (yes, hypoctritical maybe). So surely if there are rules for troops holding pow's, there must be rules for soldiers trying to free POW's from the enemies.

Remember, though - it's usually only a war crime if the loser did it.

This seems like it may hold the answer. But I wish not to read it.

Will some one do it for me?

There really are no rules for war. However, the side that will survive has to look responsible to its citizens and to its allies so it is compelled to follow "suggestions of war," like the Geneva Conventions, even if the enemy scoffs at them. In my opinion, in war the life of a friend soldier should have higher priority than the life of an enemy soldier. Torturing and executing prisoners of war is barbaric.

War itself is barbaric, though. The violent resolution of political-cultural-economic disputes needs to be avoided if at all possible. Putting rules on war is like using air freshener in a sewage treatment facility: The ugliness is still there.

    I agree kind of.

No one in their right mind would believe Saddam would follow Geneva Conventions right?

The US/UK will, but its not like its a commandment from God or anything is it!

Only them that choose to follow it will.
    Such is life.

Even if it was a commandment from God, some people still wouldn't pay attention to it, unfortunately.
