    What's Your Favorite Empire?

What's your favorite empire? You can judge based on land conquered, number of different peoples conquered, duration, total wealth, per capita wealth, style and coolness, consequences (good and bad) for humanity (includes scientific and technological achievements and artistic and literary accomplishments), treatment and rights of its citizens/subjects, national bias, randomicity factor, or no reason in particular.

This could have been a poll, but there are too many different empires to choose from. Some suggested empires include the following:

    - the United States of America
    - Russia/the Soviet Union
    - China
    - the British Empire
    - the Austro-Hungarian Empire
    - the Mongal Empire/Khannite of the Golden Horde
    - France
    - the Netherlands
    - Spain
    - Portugal
    - the Ottoman Empire
    - the Islamic Caliphate
    - the Mugul Empire (in India)
    - the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire
    - the Roman Empire
    - Iran/the Persian Empire/the Parthian Empire
    - the Assyrian Empire
    - Babylonia
    - Egypt
    - the Inca Empire
    - the Aztec Empire
    - the Galactic Empire
    - Mordor

Doubtless someone will have a favorite empire that somehow I forgot to mention. Well, guess what, that empire sucks.

The Netherlands? My little country mentioned between the USA, Russia, the Roman empire and the Mongol empire? Wow!

    Sorry, I don't have a favourite empire.

The Dutch had to be doing something, what with their founding New York and claiming a few islands. If that's not enough for greatness, there's always the future.

Just joking. Yes, the Dutch claimed parts of Indonesia, South-Africa, and parts of southern (Suriname) and middle America. Some countries in the Caribbean sea, like the Nederlandse Antillen, are still part of the kingdom of the Netherlands. But it is not something to be very proud of.

Empire...hmmm we Brits had a rather nice empire at one time.

Then again so did the Spanish and the French. Good job Brittania rules the waves!

Ahh the history, glorious sea battles, timeley invasions etc.

History is compelling dont you think?

The poet Heinrich Heine summed up this propensity:

"The Frenchmen and Russians possess the land,
    The British possess the sea,
But we have over the airy realm of dreams
    Command indisputably."

On occasion, the German fondness for escapism - their need for a spiritual essence, can make them seem otherworldly and impractical. Goethe noted wistfully, "While we Germans torment ourselves with solving philosophical questions, the English with their practical intelligence laugh at us and conquer the world."

She was so Blonde, she spent 20 minutes looking at the orange juice can because it said "Concentrate."

When in doubt, read the FAQ.
    Then ask a smart question.
