If the US succeeds in taking in the large cities quickly, the war will probably be over quickly. But I am afraid most of the war will be in those cities, there are Saddam's most loyal soldiers (the Republican Guard and Special Republican Guard), such a war will take a lot of lives.

It sure will... but the civilian lives is what everyone is afraid of excluding sadam (he don't even deserve his name spelled with first letter in capital!), he don't even cara about his own people.

Yep, that is what I meant. If heavy fighting is going on in the cities, I hope the civilians had the chance to flee. But it could be that the army of Iraq keeps them in the cities to make fighting in the streets difficult for the Americans and Brittish. One man with a gun can control a hundred without.

Now ground troops have crossed the Iraq-Kuwait border into Saddam country. Last check the marines were just bulldozing through sand barns. It's seems strange that the only Iraqi soldiers encountered have immediately surrendered. Maybe Saddam has something more up his sleeve.

If he has any chemical weapons, he will probably use them when the troops are close to Baghdad.

my hope is that the only thing Saddam has up his sleeve is shrapnel from a good ol' american bunker buster.

Nobody has yet confirmed that Saddam is alive. The taped speech can not be considered proof can it? how beautiful would it be if they got him on the first attack? This could go down in history as the "three minute war"

    one can dream...

i hate war. my friend said i shouldn't have an opinion because I am not as intelligent or educated as the 'high people' making the decisions.

    EDIT:
hasn't Hussein gassed his own people or something? Does he deserve to get killed?

    > The taped speech can not be considered proof can it?

No way - I don't understand why people keep saying that because he said the date it was some indication of the fact that the tape was current. I could say "May 18, 2015", but that doesn't really mean I've time travelled. We've known that the war was going to start today since Tuesday... Also, they're not really sure it was him...

    > if they got him on the first attack?

That'd be cool, but I wonder what'd happen after that - would we just stop where we are, or what?

The white house has said that at this point, a temporary occupation is going to happen whether we have to kill saddam or not. It is necessary to establish the new govt. Just like Afghanistan

I also hate war. I don't agree with your fiend, everybody can have his or her opinion, that is a human right. It is not that those 'high people' are very intelligent or very educated, but they have much more information than you and I have. That makes that they can make decision based on such information. We make our decisions and develop our opinions based upon what we see, read and hear from the media and from directly communicating with people from there.

In the news I read that Russia and China demand the US to immediately stop the war. Has the US already reacted on that?

In the Dutch news I read that support for the war in the Netherlands has increased from 27% to 41%. 52% Of the Dutch are of the opinion that hte Netherlands should not give military support, only political support.

Paraphrased "Who cares." I don't think there's been an official declaration yet.

    >I think america as a whole is not worried about russia or china, i'm not.

That is different here in the Netherlands, perhaps also in other European countries. Here people are talking a lot about what Poetin has said today, which was that the war should stop.

Also, in the Netherlands there live a lot of Iraqi's and other muslims (mainly Turkey and Marocco). Saturday our government will be talking with the Iraqi and other muslim organisations in our country. Also they will talk with the political party called the Arabic-European-Liga, which has some extreme points of view.
