Do bees & wasps bother you?

As the warm weather approaches, and starts to show it's face(long over due), it's BEE season!

    Do bees bother you?
    Are you allergic to bees?

What bees bother you more than others? Do any facinate you? Please share your stories if you have any.

To me, hornets, the most common bee in my area, do not bother me. I've grew up with them, and if you come barging into a location where one is wandering around, generally they'll fly away off into the distance. I myself have swat at plenty of them, along with alot of different people I know, and they fly away.

Yellow Jackets are in our area, but are not as common. These bees are unbelievably nasty. A friend of mine, while hanging out with me, had one GLUED to his shoulder stinging him repeatedly WHILE it was dying(he was spraying it with insect spray and it was still attacking him!). I guess we shouldn't have been stupid kids flinging mud at their nest.

I've never had any experiences with bumble bees, I've probably only seen 10 in my life.

Mud Daubers facinate me, and make me eerie at the same time. They are a form of wasp. And generally, there's 3 kinds of them. Black with highlights of blue, black with highlights of yellow, or all black. I've had 2 encounters that I can remember with all black Mud Daubers which is why I say they facinate and put me on edge at the same time. One time is when I was in our garage and I was going to leave the garage out the entrance for the car. One of these Mud Daubers was bumping up against the wall and when I got approximately 2-3 feet away from him, he swun around and hovered in place, gently, almost like he was dancing, moving back and forth in the motion of a door swinging on a hinge sort of curiously studying me. Another time, I was with my first g/f. We were sitting down, and one of these bees came up to me inches from my face, hover back and forth, then he flew away. THEN, he came back and did it again. This happened like 3-4 times before he finally stopped. I've never beens stung by one, and my research shows that they are a very quiet going bee.

They look similar to a dragon fly, and fly almost the same way. But, they're ugly -

Surely bee's and hornet's are completely different animals?

Bee's pollinate flowers and can only sting you once, they die in the process.

Wasp's, including hornets, are a pain in the arse and can sting several times.

After a quick research, you have a point. But lets not stray from the discussion.

With that said, let's merge them, or pretend that wasps and bees are similar. Things that resemble bees. Flying stingers.

Bee's and so forth - No, I encourage them into my garden.
Wasp's and so forth - Yes, I swat the little buggers.

Me and an ex went skinny dipping in a lake behind my house once. For whatever reason i had left to water for a second and a yellow jacket stung my manlihood. I'll never skinny dip again, and i now hold a personal vendetta to anything with a stinger.

Wasps/hornets/yellow jackets - yes, to a certain extent. If a wasp is just buzzing around me, I'll let it be...but if I feel that it's threatening me, or if it has a nest near me, then I'll move/kill it.

Yellow jackets suck...they're mean. We used to always have huge nests of them on our upstairs windows. Bleh...and when they used to make nests under the slide, we'd get stung like crazy.

Bees? Nope...not unless I plan on screwing with them (and I can't think of a sane moment in my life where I'd want to)

Along these lines, I absolutely can't stand Horse Flies....dear God I want to kill them all.

    African killer bee.

"It is not necessary to disturb the hive itself to initiate an AHB attack. In fact, Africanized bees have been know to respond viciously to mundane occurrences, including noises or even vibrations from vehicles, equipment and pedestrians."

    - Sure, they do look for sweets, and can only sting once, but hundreds of them at once makes up for that.

    Any particular reason?

When they bite it's like 3/4 the power of a bee sting, but they do it over and over and over. Damn do I hate those things! ::shakes fist::

A horse fly bite really can hurt. In central/southern Africa there is a bigger version called a Hippo fly, man, one of them takes a chunk out of you and the blood really flows, only thing to say positively about them, is they are not know to carry any disease, now Tsetse flies and damn mosquitoes...

Is there a word for fear of wasps? Like somethingphobia, if so I have it. I turn into a big sissy when it comes to wasps. Even looking at that picture you posted made me feel uncomfortable!

I would imagine it would be something like "vespulaphobia", vespula being the Linnaen name for the family of wasps.

    *** EDIT ***

Bizarrely, I did a quick google and found that people with a fear of wasps have a patron saint!

    *** EDIT again ***

    I was wrong.

    Spheksophobia: Fear of wasps.

    Sexophobia? How very odd.
