... has a strange image in mind of groups of Spheksophobes sitting in a circle chanting prayers to saint Friad...

bees are beautiful creatures that want to be left alone.

    Wasps are moody.

I live in UK so we dont see many of the afore mentioned 'african killer zombie vampire' bees. Are they in US?

Oh yes, so dont be scared of bees-become a bee-keeper for a few months-that will alleviate your fear.

EDIT-NB, if you are allergic to bees, DO NOT become a bee-keeper!
    Such is life.

Ironic, since I wanted to become a beekeeper during my childhood(in between my hopes to be a firefighter and my hopes to be a submarine captain).

European honey bees were once common, but a disease nearly eradicated them throughout the country a few years ago. They have started making a comeback in the last couple of years, but they're still not as common as I remember in my barefoot childhood days (barefoot until I got stung by one!). Luckily, the Africanized honey bees have not gotten this far north in the United States yet.

Bumblebees and the similar-looking carpenter bees are bigger and make a louder buzz noise as they fly by, but I've never been too bothered by them.

Yellowjackets, which some people mistakenly call sweat bees, are more of a nuisance. They always swarm around empty soda cans and near trash cans as they look for something sweet to drink. Luckily, I've never been stung by one of these wasps. Real sweatbees are tiny and not a nuisance.

Paper wasps and mud daubers always seem to build their nest in an inconvenient spot. My sister had been viciously attacked by a colony of them enough to have to be taken to the hospital.

Horseflies' bites are pretty painful. I hate those oversized flies.

hahahahah, that's almost as good as your reply to the nitrogen cooling thread for pc's...

"It's not like my computer is so fast because of the chilly weather inside it."

And yes, my dad is allegric to bees/wasps, but not drastically. That stuff is no fun.

...I've seen about 20 hornets already today.
The world is waiting. I must leave you now.

I now live in Northern New York State, so I haven't seen many, but I used to live in California, and my friends and I would go around chasing bees that were in the sand, and try to capture them in little fruit cups. Wheee! Never got stung, just slapped a few with my hands, reeeel smart.
The only good thing about freezing beyond feeling in the final Nordic ski race was that I couldn't feel that tumble I did going about 30 mph, maybe more.
On the other hand, not feeling any part of my body for 30 minutes was scary, especialy for my manhood.

Windoze: XP, hate it, though its more stable than my old 98SE
    Dream: linux, mandrake, then slackware.

Bees and Wasps are scary MOFOs along with butterflies. Most people think butterflies are nice insects with kewl wings, but little do they know that butterflies and ladybugs are really EVIL CREATURES WITH HUGE TEETH THAT ARE USED TO RIP APART HUMAN FLESH. That is why I stay away from them all.
