    good news and bad news

    The good news is:

-The book store just called and said that my copy of "Programming Windows 5th edition" by Charles Petzold just came in.

    The bad news is:

-My mom bought the book and now I can't get it until Christmas.

    ***************

Well, the bad news isn't so bad. I'm going to get another programming C book and read that. I do have a lot of time before Christmas, though.

I'm so excited to learn Windows programming! I can't wait!

Yikes, garfield thats a long time to wait. Why did you buy from a store though, I broght it off ebay new and it was about half the price listed on amazon.com. Geuss you stuck learning nomal C until then, I never found any windows tutorials that good. (excepts sunligh/esses)

Maybe you could convice your mom to get you the C# book comming out in november, and let you have this one.

    >so what is so special about this book?

It is the book when in comes to learning windows API. It is actuly the only programming book I own. (aside from the usless qbasic for dummies)

    age demographic...

10 - 12 = mother withholds Doom/WarCraftII and/or strategy guides of the previously mentioned games...

12 - 15 = mother withholds allowance so you can't buy the guides for yourself

16 - 18 = mother withholds car keys so you can't drive to the bank to cash your check to by the said strategy guids for yourself

18+ = you're outta the house... the good thing: now you can buy it as much as you want... the bad thing: you don't have a roof over your head, and your rear is extremely and uncomfortably cold...

the point: mom's get smarter quicker than you do... and when you think you've got her beat, you don't it was just a muppet's ploy...

a side note: by this time you don't want the games anymore, and if you still do, you need serious help... seek DA's therapist...

I wish I could do that. My mom has a strong will.

I figure that it isn't so bad. After all, I can only get better at C to build a stronger foundation for when I'm to program Windows.

    > mom's get smarter quicker than you do...
    Every time.

*sigh* I guess I'll just have to dream about Windows programming until December 25. *tear*

Well I have this book in my hand right now. It a good book and everything and it will get you to the point where you are familiar with Windows programming with mouse, text fonts, bitmaps, dialog boxes, etc, and many other concepts such as Unicode. My only problem with the book is that it is old! It came out about the time of Win98.

Since it is such a good book it is worth reading. It's about 1400 pages long, but I am anticipating the new book, 'Windows Programming With C#' by Pezold. Actually comming out in December, not November. I got that wrong in my other post. I was supposed to come out in November but is delayed one month.

Dean, the book is old since there has has beeen no need to update it. Have you ever downloaded a new windows.dll. There have been no updated functions, and the only ones left are the onces that are not documnented the microsoft has denied having.

Perhaps, but I don't think that C# will just rely on Win32 to perform Windows programming. It could go into a lot of depth about the .NET framework class library.

The api has remained the same more or less since Win95. It has to to allow proggiez to run on all win OS's. This may change with what is planned for the future (64 Bit chips) but not at this point

Yes, but even though the .NET classes encapsulate more than the basic Win32 API, a large proportion of them are a Win32 API wrapper.

Okay, well I'll take Zen's word for it. But it is true that .NET is a system API, so this is my case for thinking that .NET is a fundamental change to the operating system.

Hey, guess what. I convinced my mom to let me buy Charles Petzold's Programming Windows and then she'll get me the other C book for Christmas. Tomorrow is the day. I'm going to pick up the book. I can't wait. I won't be able to pay attention in class. I'll just be dreaming of Programming Windows. *sigh* The good times that I await for in the future.
