    3D Studio Max

Anyone know where I can get an earlier version of 3D studio max? I'm talkin about 3.x, or something like that. And if anyone used that old of a program can you tell me is it good? I've considered ebay, is there any actuall physical place I can find one at?

No harder than any other 3D package. If you understand the concepts then learning is easy, otherwise you have to learn how to make things while struggling with the quirks of whatever package you decide to use. Also, don't confuse complicated with powerful. 3DS MAX is full featured, you would have similar learning problems with Maya, Lightwave, and other production level applications.

Well, the concepts of 3D modeling are pretty much the same from modeler to modeler... however, that doesn't mean they're equally as easy. Along with power comes a good deal of confusion, IMO.

I picked up the free Zanoza Modeler pretty quickly. I've already made 2 cars, and am currently working on a 3rd. I also have 3D Studio Max 3 and Lightwave 7.0. I've tried to learn both 3DS Max and Lightwave, but so far, have yet to grasp either enough to even make a simple model. I even have a book on 3DS Max that I bought, and yet, I still don't get it

I'd move away from 3DS Max if I were you. It's great and powerful, if you know how to use it. I've seem some awesome models come from that program... I just don't get it though.

3dsmax is kinda slow for me. All that mouse interface stuff. With Blender it all revolves around hotkeys. Everything is much faster.

So, looks like lots of people have a ton of oppinions, but none of them really matter, only a small amount of people who post reply on this thread actually know what they are talkin' 'bout. Crazy...

But anyway, TravisS you said you use 3DS v3.0, is it any good? I wanted to get my hands on one, but it's too expensive... So I'm trying to get something, something, cheep, like an earlier version. So do you know where to get one, Discreet probably does not make it anymore, so there is only a limited number of them on the market, original copies anyway...

What's your problem? The only person in here who didn't sound like they knew what they were talking about was LouDu. Sorry if people didn't answer in a manner befitting someone of your obvious intelligence and character. In the future I shall scour the web thoroughly and consult several different wise men before attempting to reply to you, for my chief concern is living up to your expectations.

I'm sorry - it shall never happen again. I will now go give someone $5 to cane me, hoping all the while that I will be eventually forgiven for my misdeeds and may be placed into your good graces again. I would even settle for "Not-so-good-graces", if only I could escape this horrible net of shame I have stupidly gotten myself entangled in.

Hmm. Maybe YOU'RE the one who doesn't know.
I have some experience with Blender, I even started a list of the many tutorials:
    http://mysite.reblended.com/tutlinks/

You see, one advantage of using Blender is the massive community here http://www.elysiun.com, but now that I think about it, maybe we don't need some self proclaimed 1337 3D artist showing us his 1337 3D.

    EDIT:
You want R3 of 3d studio crap? Here:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=1251
    R2.5:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=3775
Wow that was hard. If that is too expensive for you, then go dl the warez version, give up in a week and leave us alone.
    Thank you.

The same company that makes Max makes a scaled down
version of the same program. IT's called Discreet Plasma,
and it's very good and I think it sells for only $600, or so.
You can make fully functional swf files, and also export your
movies to Macromedia Director. Lot of other things you can do, too, that I'm not aware of. There's a good tutorial for beginners and also a forum where you can ask questions and trade ideas.
The forum is modded by Discreet programmers who work on
the program. Not much activity in the forums right now, but that's
only because Plasma is a new program and word of mouth
hasn't spread yet. But this is a program well worth looking at, considering the prohibitive cost of programs like Max, Lightwave,
and the $10,000 Maya package. You can get Poser 5 now for
    $319.
    No. Wait. Don't hang up!

    This is America calling!
