    Well, not just a pen.

They have colours, so I guess they use crayons AND felt tips.
    Such is life.

Don't forget about the piece of paper to draw it on.
    Try not.
    Do or do not.
    There is no try.

...what're pepole? and since when do they make The Simpsons?
If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrariwise, what it is, it wouldn't be, and what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?

Originally, the animators traced their animations onto cels
(sheets of clear plastic). The outline of the animated object would
be on the front side, and the color would be on the back. That
was back in the olden days, though. Eventually Disney created a
process that eliminated the need for tracing. The original paper
drawing could be copied to the cel (that way, the animations
    didn't need to be traced)...

Anywho, each frame was layered over static backgrounds, then
    photographed.

I'm sure that's how (or close to how) The Simpsons is animated.
They may use more advanced ways to color, or draw -- but I
know it's done on cels. You can even buy them from Fox. Some
are expensive, though ($400. There's one I saw of the whole
    family that's going for $1600)...

Here's a place that "cels" them (Get it? "Cels", "Sells." Hehe. Clever).

Of course, nowadays you can simulate everything with computers.
Cel-animation really isn't necessary, anymore (but it's so cool).

    Animation in general is rad.

Greatest Animated Movies of All Time:

    Cell: The Lioin King.
    Clay: The Nightmare Before Christmas.
    CG: Toy Story.

Edit: Changed a link. Found a better site that sells Simpsons
    Animation Cels.
