    Flash...

...you thought I was going to say "Flashdaddee?" Sorry cheez, couldn't resist

Seriously though, what are your thoughts on flash-based websites? I don't see as many as I used to, perhaps it was one of those passing fads.

Flash games are ok, but I think websites that use flash extensively in their design are annoying as hell. I shouldn't have to wait for a stupid movie to load just to read something on the site.

Like anything good. Can be awesome, can be WAY over the top. So often I come across a site with a ludicrously unnecessary flash intro that I just skip past.

Yeah they can certainly overdo certain things, Like having a nice
animation when you click a link is nice but when you've seen it
over a 100 times you get tired of the waiting.

I think it has it's merits... but some people just overdo it. I like to see what people can do with it tho.

That's actually quite tasteful. My view on flash is that a little goes a long way, but a lot goes too far.

I used flash once and loved it, i used it to animate a static logo that the guy i made a website for had. The company sells vib-bowls (vibrate via magnets which makes small parts like screws go up a rail system, then they can be sorted, etc.) The original logo just has black screw heads that were all lined up along the rail. Here's what i did with it (ported to gif).

It'd be nice if Flash was as standardized as HTML, i.e. it isn't available for only a few browsers. I'd like to code it into mine but no way am I gonna let the gaping security hole that is ActiveX in...

It can be very nice, like at that Terminator site. But it is only eyecandy. It has no functional point at a homepage.

That's what they said about java....a lot of people used java apps for navigation...it's dying down now as lower bandwidth stuff like dhtml takes the stage, but you can always find a use for things like java or flash.

Want to see a great flash site? Check out http://www.homestarrunner.com/main9.html

A freind pointed me in this direction....and I am glad of it.

Regular flash has no functionality other than presentation - but the new MX allows more control over Vector graphics and data manipulation - we might start to see some MX sites and maybe even MX apps come about.
