I used to be a big chatter on IRC, unfortunately it doesn't work if you're behind a firewall (firewalls usually don't allow ports used by IRC - 6667 +/- 10(?))

Port tunneling might help, but I just don't busy myself with it .

ICQ is much more clever, as it works without problems behind firewalls - it automatically detects and uses free ports. This feature should be implemented in IRC clients as well...

However, I don't use ICQ for chatting, mainly for sending - free - SMSes.

    Um....

    IRC and ICQ are different.
    IRC is a chat protocol.
ICQ is most commonly used for instant messaging, but has some other nifty features.

yeah.. I know like all of you I know that IRC and ICQ is different.

ICQ: Instant Messanger (With other features)
    IRC: Internet Relay Chat

My ICQ Number is: 53369075, I loved to use ICQ (1996-2001)

But few years ago, I found MSN IM as common among people I work with. It serves my purpose.
So, now I'm using MSN IM.

That would depend on your client and the IRC server you're connected to

I used to use IRC... not anymore though. I use ICQ and MSN w/ Miranda (miranda.sourceforge.net), or GnomeICU for ICQ when i'm on Linux. For those of you that use trillian, I think you'll like miranda.
