Thread: acronyms

after heavy site redesign the site is near comlpeteion but has not been uploaded yet. However CASE is now available, this is an idea i thought would be cool to make available to the net community.
A searchable computer acronym database! The database is near completion with over 300 acronym entries. A search takes around 2 seconds.

i have plans for extending it to. Aswell as the definition it will give yoyu a description of the technology, uses and further info sites

What is on the back end of that form?

Just wondering - what sorts of things are on there? I tried a few different words, but they just opened up a new search window - it didn't do anything.

I tried:
gnu, html, afaik, ms, brb...

It's a good idea, though! Kinda like the jargon file...

html, gnu and ms are all on there. The only thing is you must click on search not press enter. This is a bug i have not yet fixed. It will be repaired soon, hopefully.

I hate to admit this, promise you wont ban me form the board or refuse to talk to me but its a javascript. I am looking at porting it to PHP though.

Gnu's entry appears to be broken.

If you want to make it even more ambitious, you could have definitions for the acronyms listed...

thanks for pointing out the broken entries they will be repaired. Redevelopment is underway at the moment to include descriptions and uses. The words listed will be added and the database will be updated shortly.

CASE has now been updated to include nearly 100 new entries. CASE now searches a database of 410 acronyms (and it still only takes a few seconds )

Heh. It doesn't work because I disallowed popups and document writing on my browser.

It seems kinda weird to transmit the whole database. If you need help on PHP, let me know. Even though I don't know much about it.

I tried AIM (Aol Instant Messenger) and DSL and neither turned up any results...

im adding them all the time - as i remember them and as people submit them. Its still only starting out and as far as i know its the only searchable computer acronym database available. I cant believe i included adsl but forgot dsl
dsl and aim along with a further 34 wll be added and update 3 will be available soon.
If anybody can think of any more not in there please let me know. I want to make this a really useful resource. Im not to sure about it opening popups i may change it so it opens in the same page, what do you think?
Also could anyone tell me what php stands for - i know the hp stands for hypertext preprocessor but what does the first p stand for. Thanx for the input everyone!

you can use layers to change the text on the page itself, so like you can have a small layer at the bottom, where you can set the definition in. I used that technique @ Ronan Realty don't ask me HOW, I just stole it from my friend's site

PHP stands for PHP--Hypertext preprocessor. It's another recursive acronym.
