Music Piracy is Good?

Economic view:

GRRRRREAT IDEA. Imagine:

1 CD bought -> Rip offs -> company lose money -> bankrupt -> no more music.

You're all dooming the music industry.

Their main source of income is from selling CD and you're all ripping away this line of profit.

Imagine year 2150, you're all listening to 2050 music because no one dares to go and start another music industry again since they know they will lose money.

Solution:

Force people to buy, not rip from Internet. ANY offenders will be banned from the Internet permanently, while reducing the music CD price. This is the only solution that I can come up with at this time since no-one will be scared when we only fine them.

If they were smart they'd make cds a better deal, or hell offer the mp3s for a small price, i'd pay 25 cents for an mp3 i really wanted, they just need to adapt.

Not going to happen. Artists will just find another way to make money from their music. As it is, most artists make very little compared to what the industry moguls make. Someone eventually will come up with a method that will circumvent the music labels, and in the end, it will be more lucrative for the artists.

That made me laugh. I know someone who has turned his spare bedroom into a server room. He has a solid state hard drive dedicated to serving up MP3s over his home network (which comprises Linux, Windows & Mac machines).

Exactly, artists benefits from their concerts and other royalties. Artists receive a very small portion of the profits of sold CDs. It's the record labels, who benefit from sold CDs, not so much the artists. In which case decreasing CD sales is not much of a hit on the artists.

As I said before, without being able to download music on the net I wouldn't have found out about so many bands. IMO, the smaller artists benefit from the net because it gives them more oppurtunity to make a name for themselves. Whereas, the larger artists don't benefit that much at all, but what does that really matter when they make so much money already? It's sort of a toss up between the two, but I think the benefit it does serve to the smaller bands outweighs the deterrent it causes the larger bands (or artists, whatever you want to call them).

First up, saying piracy is good is just a PR stunt.
Makes him seem more in touch, rebellious ie more attractive and so profitable. Remember the same people (Murdoch) owns his record company and the newspaper and they are both in the business to make money from you.

They have an outdated business model that will soon fail. It will have to re-invent itself to survive, probably as artists selling direct to the public.

But the bottom line

piracy is theft.

What if it was YOUR work and income being stolen?

You want to be a programmer? (particularly in games)

Bad luck! Each game that is not paid for is one less that will not make it past a development discussion in the future for lack of funds.

You want all games to be simple shareware ones made without the resources to pay people for a few years while the game is produced?

You want all music to be homemade without the benifits of expensive technology or quality studio musicians?

Or do you want to have more anti 'fair use' like MS's PALLADIUM,? or more laws like the DMCA ect.

Do you want us to excuse you for doing something you know is wrong / illegal?

Can't have it both ways!
