    If you could...

If you could have any one computer related book for free which one would it be and why?

I have a $40 gift certificate to Borders Bookstore, and I'll probably be using it in the next few months. Thing is I'm not sure which book I would want (I'm not big on reading books either at all lol), so I'm sure by hearing what book you would like to have I could get a good idea for mysefl. I already got The C++ Programming Langague: Special Edition less than a month ago, as well. Hmmm...

Btw, I'm not expecting anyone to directly recommend a book for me, either.

If I were to get one for programming, it'd be a toss up between a book on ADA and one on Java (jerks making me take it for my degree, so i figure i'll get a head start).
    PHP and XML
    Let's talk about SAX

The computing field is so vast!!

BUt how about "tricks of the windows game programming gurus"?
    Or "Linux in a nutshell"?

Can it be a computer-related book that's not directly related to programming? If that's the case, then I've heard good things about Kevin Mitnick's new book, the Art of Decption (I hope the things are true - I'm picking it up at lunch today).

If you want computer-like stuff in a non-technical book, pick up anythign by Neal Stephenson - it's fiction, but most of it has to do with computery things (esp. Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon)

US$40.00 isn't going to be enough but I love this box set. Unforutantely it is... not light reading. I think I would enjoy it more if I understood all of it!

The bookstore near me gives a free book if you buy 10 (doesn't have to be all at once). They don't have any sort of a price limit on it, though, so I think I might get that

I can't wait to see the look on the lady's face when my "free book" costs them $100+...

I'd feel bad if their prices weren't pretty high to begin with, plus I've bought some pretty expensive books there (Petzold being the top one there)

My dad did something like that once, he spent 10$ on a bunch of .99 cent kiddie books for my lil sis, then bought me a 900+ page Windows XP Reference Guide.....i know that hurt them, it was the M$ version.

I would definitely buy one of those fat text books on AI programming if i had enough money. I'm really starting to get interested in AI programming in general.. next time i have some money laying around i think i'm going to go find a decent book in BN and purchase it.

    >>Kevin Mitnick's new book, the Art of Decption

Ooh, I've got that. So does Betazep. Such a cool read...that's what we were randomly going on about in threads at FD.

:groans: Why can't any bookstores near me do that? They're all expensive as hell, too. The cheapest one is Books-A-Million and that has a horrible computer book selection. Does that bookstore even *have* Knuth? Because I highly doubt they'd give it to you for free if they have to ship it in...hell, even the B&N over here doesn't have Knuth...(:cough:bastards)

Our BN has Knuth, but this little hole in the wall doesn't, no. I'm going to ask about it next time I go in there - almost every book I get from them has to be ordered, so IMO, it's only fair (on the other hand, my opinion doesn't matter in this case).
