    Linux! Ack!

    *Grooooaaaan*
I just tried to update Red Hat Linux from 7.4 to 8.0.
Needless to say it screwed up.
Halfway (4 hours) into the installation it had a problem with the kdebase file. It was corrupt. So now I'm stuck with a half done 8.0 installation. Is there ANYTHING I can do, short of wiping that harddrive and starting over with some other distro?

The real question is why you wanted to use 8.0 in the first place...

Why does everyone seem to be dogging 8.0 on this board? I consider myself a veteran of Linux (been using and admining extensively for 2 years) and see nothing but good things in 8.0. Yeah it's buggy but all x.0 releases from most any distro are a little buggy. That's why they have .1, .2, etc releases.

About the corrupt install. Do you think it may have been a media problem(bad burned disk)? I never trust upgrading on anything (windows or Linux). If I'm moving to a new version I usually backup my /home directory to a CD and tell the new install to not format my previous /home partition and be sure I specify that partition to be /home again. Where exactly does it crap out? While copying files?

The problems come up when it's in the middle of extracting the RPMs. And Linux was installed recently, so not much important data was in the home directory.
I doubt it was a bad burned disk, but the possibility's there.

F_M: I don't give a fsck what you think about 8.0. I like what I've seen of it. Have you even used it?

Well, I've used Slackware, Debian, Mandrake, Lycoris, FreeBSD (and probably others) and done a Linux from Scratch, but I still use Red Hat. I'm just comfortable with it and never had any problems at all.
