Thread: Which distribution of Linux should I get?

Linux doesn't neccesarily mean console like it used to in the beginning of it. You can easily get a working desktop up and running and never touch the CLI. That's the great thing about Linux growing and advancing.

Not every Linux user today wants to know what goes on behind the scenes. They want an easy alternative to Microsoft or other OSes and Red Hat, Mandrake, and Suse give them that easy alternative. They want to run the install program and then be able to browse the web, type a document, or check their email.

If someone wants to seriously learn Linux then I suggest them start with an easy distro and learn the ropes. Then try some of the harder distros or a Linux from Scratch.

Yeah, I've never used Linux, so I need something that I will understand. That's not to say though that once I get an easy to use distro I'll use it forever. I'm sure that once I understand a bit about Linux and I have the time, I'll try some other distros to see which is best for me.

As of now I am still considering buying Mandrake, however I am still open to suggestions. Thanks for all of the advice, everybody.

Mandrake is very good for Linux newbies and the installtion is very comfortable

So I would buy Mandrake or download it at: www.linuxiso.org

well you won't drown if you use the.... err this makes no sense
if you read the manual it really isn't that hard. of course it's up to you which distro you wan't to use.

Redhat is for servers, for coding and good as workstation. The best Linux distribution

howdy,
it makes no sense for a linux newbie to DL a kernel and gcc and comiple it, then try to set up the boot strap , then configure hardware.....
that is what turns people away from linux.
if you want to complicate your life you can with ANY distro, that is the advantage of linux. you have total control over the entire OS.
i know of people that code in emacs just so they can say "i use a console editor, to hell with that GUI stuff"
the advantage of linux is you can if you want to but you dont have to.

Didn't you only go through one (maybe two?) distros? There's hardly room for you to be suggesting a best for anyone

That's the thing about Linuxers - they spend one or two days with their new "Hey, I'm a 1337 h4x0r" linux system, and suddenly they're experts.

No offense really, but that tends to be the general consensus.

Linux nerds? I laugh at Windows losers who actually think they're cool and know what the hell they're doing just because they have Windows XP and write a little bit of code.
