So, is there anything I should know about Linux? Anything especially cool? Like how do I use gcc?

    problems already...

    Ok I have these problems...

    1. I in my boot loader (GRUB) I have 3 options seeing as I updated Red Hat (the little red thing was @ the bottom corner). How do I get rid of one of the options?

    2. My sound card doesn't work. Its detected by Linux, (see below screenshot) but I need drivers for it. The drivers that came with my computer were called 'Sound Max' ive searched google but found nothing for Linux.

    Can anyone help?
    Thanks...

//EDIT: Ok, seeing as I cant take screenshots, i'll show you what it says:

    Vendor: Intel Corp.
    Model: 82801DB AC
    Module: i810_audio

Question 1, try reading this article: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...onfigfile.html

Question 2, you tried to hear MP3 or WAV files? RH 8.0 haven't mp3 support, you'll need to download it by yourself, you can find it here: http://psyche.freshrpms.net/

My opinion, leave Red-Hat and try using Slackware.

You've stirred up a hornet's nest, there... Distro bashing is a favorite pasttime of Linux users, it seems..

    Nothing wrong with RH.

But this version of Red-Hat (psyche), is a fully mistake of the company. The 7.3 (Valhalla) is a better one.

Red-Hat have a good support, but I really dont like this distro, you can try Slackware (it's a kinda hard, no gui installation, you'll need to configure XF86 alone) but this is the way you should learn.

Another nice distro is Debian, you can try this one too.
But if you are a personal user, dont want so much problems in your head, try getting SuSE, nice distro.

    Good luck.

I've got Mandrake (a few versions old), and didn't have any weird problems at all.

Grub can be configured by manually editing the configuration file:

    /boot/grub/grub.conf

Details on doing this can be obtained by accessing the linux info system. At a bash prompt, type:

    info grub

To get a bash prompt either exit the gui or open a terminal window. (This is equivalent to msdos mode or a dos session window in windows, respectively.)

    man grub

will also give some information, info is more detailed.

The man and info commands are very usefull. They should be the first thing you try when you need linux information. Generally, man gives a brief overveiw and info is more in depth. Info can be navigated somewhat like htlm.

As to your soundcard problem, the i810 is supposed to be supported. You shouldn't need any driver. Most likely it is some sort of configuration problem. One thing to check is that your soundcard is indeed a i810. Linux has been known to misidentify unsupported hardware as something that is supported. Windows does the same thing, only worse.

For what it's worth, I like rh8.0 better than 7.3 . Just my opinion.

Why do you think 8.0 is a mistake? I think it's much more user-friendly, the install is more intuitive, and it has Gnome2 instead of 1.4 which is much better.

Ok, about mandrake, I like this distro.
He is a really user-friendly distro, nice documentation, a professional support.

Good luck with your new distro, if you need some help, tell us.

The installation is the same thing, not exactly, but not a critical change. You can update easily the gnome, it's not a difficult problem to do.

RedHat 8 is extremely heavy, and I did a such professional installation, package by package and still, rh is so heavy.

In what psyche is better than valhalla (7.3)?
Can you give me an example?
